I've been coming to South Lake Tahoe for years and had no idea that this place was even there until last month. Purely by chance, I drove down from my hotel to check on the beach access that my hotel reservation gave me. There, nestled next to the beach, was the Lakeside Beach House and I decided to check it out. Imagine, if you will, the archetypal beach hangout with plastic chairs and tables and sensational views of the crystal blue lake. Patrons are protected from the late afternoon breezes off the lake by a clear plastic windbreak on the shoreline side of the restaurant. Not sure what to expect, I asked for a table in the sun with a view of the sandy beach and ordered a beer and a Asian chicken salad. The food and beverage duly arrived and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of both. So much so, that I decided to return the following evening with some friends. On both occasions there was live music from a small stage area in the far corner of the patio. The waitress was very friendly and steered my companions towards the fish and chips which she strongly recommended as the specialty of their English chef. I went with the Caesar salad, but the others followed her recommendation and reported that the fish and chips was indeed well worth the star billing. So, if you are looking for a quick lunch at the beach or perhaps a round of drinks while you watch the sunset, you could do far worse than give the Lakeside Beach House a try. It is never owing to make the. Michelin guide, but they do what they do very well and what a location!
