Hall Farm Bed and Breakfast
Ranked #2 of 2 Gilling East B&B and Inns
Reviewed 7 May 2012

I stayed in the most delightful Bed and Breakfast last week while travelling to Ampleforth in North Yorkshire. Having no pre booking I passed through the village of Gilling, which was very sleepy and quite over a small bridge and just then found a sign for Hall Farm The fields running up to the farm where filled with new baby lambs and young Mothers delighted with their off spring. It was cold and very damp for late April but this had not put me off

I was welcomed by Virginia Collinson who owns the farm , she brought me hot buttered scones, just made and a pot of tea. My room was light are bright with large picture windows on each side giving sight of the farm from every angle. I slept well and ready for a hearty breakfast, which did not disappoint. The bacon was local cured and the eggs from their own chicken with home made bread, the smell was to die for

I decided to venture out and visit Ampleforth Abbey and stay another night, before I returned to the real world with its fast pacing , leaving behind a quite restful stay, I will certainly be back, you should try it too I recommend it

Room Tip: Good for walkers and if you want to get away from the usual b and b

We have stayed five times at this fantastic B&B and really enjoyed the break, the area and the hospitality. Comes close to having the best views in England and the breakfasts are always great. There is remarkably low levels of light pollution so a great sky if cloud free and it is a really lovely rural setting. Virginia who runs her farm B&B in an unobtrusive way, does everything possible to make your stay comfortable. A great bolt-hole and a great spot to explore the lovely North York Moors from or to visit nearby Ampleforth, the Abbey or Helmsley. A calf was born at our last visit which emphasised, in a lovely way, that this is a farm.

We came upon Hall Farm by accident, and have become regular visitors. The location is perfect, the farmhouse is surrounded by fields and an orchard garden. Breakfast is made from local if not farm made products. The homemade jams are wonderful and we hope that next year we can purchase some to take home. Our dog was made welcome and sleeps in a kennel with the farm spaniel, Jerry. The owners are true locals with a wealth of knowledge and are kind and caring. The double room is ground floor with super views and a very comfortable bed. We asked them to Dog-sit and went out without our dog to a couple of evening events, which we would have not done if the dog had to have been locked in the car.
