Second time I have been to Sushi Hachi and both times have been great. The sashimi combo and the several rolls I have had have all been terrific. Limited hours and the fact that it is always busy makes it difficult to get in sometimes so I suggest calling ahead and making a reservation. Get a seat a the sushi bar and watch the chef create your rolls right in front of your eyes. It's like watching an artist.

Intimate setting - seats about 25 guests. Nothing fancy or complicated - just a clean, sparse space. Simple operation run by a husband and wife team delivering "homey" hospitality. Do not expect tempura, ramen / udon or teriyaki chicken - they don't have a full kitchen. Instead they stick to foods they know and that they can produce quickly and simply - sashimi, nigiri, several interesting appetizers such as baby octopus wasabi and squid guts. A small hot menu includes a deliciously simple miso soup and grilled fish head. Every bite taste fresh. Be sure to call ahead for a reservation - they are deservedly busy during most business hours. And they are only open 5 days a week Tuesday to Saturday. After you taste the fresh clean food and witness the great synergy between the husband and wife team, like me, you'll wish them every success. And you will be back. Often.

Husband and wife run small restaurant so the food can take a little longer to come out. You must have an advance reservation or don't bother. They may not even answer the phone if they are busy. The quality of the food is very good at a mid-higher level pricing and worth it. Plenty of parking in the parade.

Let me premise this review, I walked into this restaurant, after not being able to find it my first few attempts, and noticed they had poor ventilation and a small little toaster type oven where they would cook individual pieces of fish. This is a recipe for a strong fish scented restaurant.
I was then greeted with what could be best described as racism. The owner told me to look at the menu as most of the food is raw and traditional and likely not for people like me. It made me chuckle, and I wasn't overly offended.

Then came the toro sashimi which you don't have to chew. i thought perhaps they dipped it in Oil or if it contained mayonnaise as this was an amazingly creamy fresh fish. The Sockeye salmon sashimi was also delicious. The Mackerel was fresh (a great way to test the sushi quality of a restaurant is through their Mackerel).

And the Ikura, wow. Better than Tojo's. I dream about it.

So, even with the poor decor and service, I rate this restaurant a 5 because for me it's more about food quality. So if you want top 5 sushi in Vancouver, visit Hachi.
