We had to make a sudden trip to Vancouver. My usual place was completely
booked up, so was the usual second - and we needed to be on the North shore.
So I had seen this place many a time and thought to give it a try. To start, it's another
one of those places that uses the most complimentary photo's of itself from 20 years ago on it's listing. Staff was ok - obviously doing their best with what they had, but
overall - if you just have to stay somewhere, fine enough .... it you want a nice place
to make your trip memorable I would reconsider. The development signs around the back of the property - which they don't mention in their listings - say it all.
Ownership doesn't care, the place is turning into condos very soon.

Room Tip: Bring your own wifi hot-spot.

Considering it was a long weekend, BC pride and the Lions were at home. We found the Grouse inn a fair price.

There is a gas station a short walk away.

Breakfast is average but included.

Rooms on the whole are clean, they just need some modernising and TLC.

It is a fairly long walk but you can walk to stanley park from the hotel. To cut down on parking costs.

A closer walk would be the Capilano Suspension bridge.

Good price
But far out of downtown Vancouver

If you are looking for the cheapest bed in North Vancouver, this place is for you. If you want friendly staff, a pleasant stay, decent breakfast, Wi-Fi and a mouse-free room, this is not the place for you.

Check in staff were rude, abruptly asking for a credit card and my ID (I explained I do not have a credit card, another guest was paying, she continued to ask until finally saying "you don't have another card with your name on it" as she needed to confirm my ID which was done with a debit card. She could have explained she was confirming ID not requiring payment).

The Wi-Fi point blank doesn't work. the lady checking us in mentioned it may not work over the side we were staying but I could not get any use out of the Wi-Fi anywhere in the hotel.

The rooms are big, the beds comfortable (although mine was poorly made) and rooms are fully equipped with a tv and mini-fridge. Bathroom was small with hair clogging the bath drain causing 2-3 inches of dirty water to build up during a shower.

Breakfast includes standard continental fare (cereal, toast, waffles, coffee, juice). While we were staying a boy spilled boiling hot water on his arm in the breakfast room/lobby. Another guest had to assist him and staff made no attempt to help or to clean up the pool of water on the floor.

Staff entered our room and made it up even though we had left out the do-not-disturb. Although some guests may like their rooms made up every day, I felt it a blatant violation of privacy that staff would enter a room when we have clearly requested they do not.

Finally, the morning of check out I discovered mouse dirt beside the bed. This was bought to the attention of staff who asked if we would wait for maintenance to look at it. They then asked why we hadn't told them the day before (we hadn't seen it). They apologised about the mouse dirt but never offered to change our room.

Unfortunately not a hotel I will be staying at again. It has the potential to be a great hotel but is let down by poor staff attitudes and maintenance.

One of the least expensive hotels close to downtown. We use the Grouse Inn for medical appt at Lions Gate- about a 15 - 20 min drive. Hotel is basic but offers a pool, which we never use. Free breakfast is very limited but the price is right to get a bit of a start on the day. Boiled eggs, plain bread to toast, apple, oj, coffee/tea, oatmeal, toaster waffles. Not enough seats, but you can take food back to your room. Coffee maker in room is not very good. CLock radio didn't work, we did not bother to call for a new one. wifi is fast. we were on the ground floor- heard some noise from up stairs, but not a lot.

Abrupt check-in. Greeting was absent and simply told that I needed ID & credit card.I waited to check-out while the front desk lady was on the phone. She ignored me and attended to a man who walked in after me, chatting away like I wasn't even there.

Large parking lot with outdoor 7-foot deep pool (supposedly warm but was very cold) and small adjacent playground. Fully functional kitchenette w/good size room/bed but sofa bed was a near fit after being pulled out. No room to get out so crawl across bed. Table for 3 in kitchen. Lots of counter space and all amenities except baking sheet. Bathroom was dated and surface cleaned but could use a deep scrubbing. All but one towel was clean. Busy and convenient area. Shopping and attraction within walking or short-distance driving distance. Offsite gym is a walk across the intersection with a 2 hour max.

You get the feeling that the staff has been hard-done by their working environ.
There are 2 little bottles of water on the kitchen counter. They are NOT complimentary and the $2/bottle price tag will be added to your bill if you consume it.

Ice and coin laundry are available on property. I wouldn't bother with the so-called breakfast beyond the hot beverages. As soon as you touch something you get the stink eye. Very limited selection anyway. You will hear your neighbors cough, sneeze, talk and/or flush the toilet. It was super quiet after 9PM so no problems sleeping. On the flip side early the first morning some random guy starts banging on the door then stops after realizing he had the wrong room. There are no peep holes in the doors, so you have to open the curtains. The second morning the housekeeping guy starts knocking on the door and then asks if we're checking out. There are no do not disturb signs to hang on the door. This place is fine if you're not picky or if you have things to do in the area. It's not the Ritz nor the Spitz. The tub needed cleaning (ring around the tub), sliding bathroom door kept jamming and closet door couldn't be closed after initially opened. The handle was missing too so you had to open from the top.

I really hope that whatever is irking the staff gets remedied soon as without guests, you have no job. We are paying customers who deserve polite treatment.

Room Tip: Chose a room w/kitchenette and do-it-yourself as breakfast is meager
