“Great hike, and views”
Review of Othello Tunnels

Othello Tunnels
Reviewed 2 April 2018

Visited Othello Tunnels. Traversing through the tunnels is a very cool experience that I would recommend to anyone in the area. There is also a good hike that will take you up the hillside, for a peaceful lookout at the peak and before descending again.

In the early parts of the spring it makes for a great day to pack the BBQ in the car, get togged out in some cold weather gear and head out to this remarkable spot.

It's easy to find, off the Coquihalla Highway, and the scenery all around is just spectacular.
The tunnels were built after many engineers said it would be impossible to make a rail route alongside the Coquihalla River because of the tortuous nature of the canyon.

Enter Chief Engineer McCulloch, who surveyed the terrain in a basket (there were no planes or helicopters back then) and figured out a way to get through.

And what an incredible way through it is!

You look down at the river raging and foaming through at the bottom of the canyon and wonder how a man could be so determined and clever.

It must have been the promise of untold wealth for his company shipping goods to and from the coast that steeled his resolve, but it was an astounding success.

Now, of course, the rails have been lifted and in their place is a walking route which is just a marvel to experience. You get amazing views of the river, a wilderness experience to boot, and a sense of the incredible fortitude of the guys that built it.

Truly awe inspiring!

It can get cold and it can be misty and damp but there are plenty of spots to fire up the BBQ and have a picnic.

In the summer it's a much prettier place because of all the greenery but it gets very busy and parking can be difficult, so I'll stick with my recommendation that you go sooner rather than later. Take your bike and explore some the the trails close by.
Enjoy

The tunnels look great but they are closed in the winter. You can still walk up to the tunnels and there is a loop route but it's quite deep snow.

One of the hidden gems, definitely is worth a ride. The waterfalls are grandiose, the tunnels are mysterious and frankly scary - even if you have a flash-light it doesn't help much.. the darkness is overwhelming. have to trust your instincts to take the next step and then the next. Our 2yo enjoyed running through the darkness though and wasn't scared at all..
