“Verily a joy!”

Ted Coney's Family Portraits
Ranked #13 of 17 things to do in Ely

Ely on a rainy day is still worth a visit - as is Ted Coney's very personal trip down Memory Lane. Not simply a gathering of 'faces from the past', [although there are some] but with fascinating representation of times gone by - both happy, sad, even painful times. It was an enormous pleasure to spend time with the Artist, whose boundless enthusiasm was a real joy, too. There was even tea and a tea-cake or three. Thank you.

We came across this attraction when researching what do to in Ely for a weekend and were directed to watch the virtual tour. This short video gave us a sneak peak into the world of Ted Coney's family portraits. What a fascinating world it is. This video made up our minds and we booked that evening for a tour (make sure you book as the tours fill up fast). On the tour each painting was explained in detail; what inspired Ted to paint them, the history of his family and the stories behind them. It made us reflect on our family and how much we don't know. It clearerly shows Ted's passion for his subject (his family!) and his ability to bring ideas together. I thoroughly recommend this as a 'must do' for any visit to Ely and the beautiful waterside area.

Ted is a wonderful, charismatic man who is passionate about what he does. The gallery is in his house which makes the experience very personal. His work is all about his family and provides a thought provoking and emotionally rewarding experience. I recommend a visit.

I watched the virtual tour a few months ago and was inspired to go on the actual tour. The video just made me want to find out more about this unusual house in the middle of Ely. Truly inspiring and enlightening. Ted has a great way of explaining things in an interesting and engaging manner. You'll learn a lot about art, as well as finding out all sorts of riveting facts about this eccentric man with a vintage car and an out-of-the-ordinary family. Highly recommended!

If you decide to go to Ely, you definitaly should visit the pop-up gallery of Ted Coney! But don't forget to make an appointment in advance!
When you enter his gallery, which is situated in his his house, you immediately immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the charming artist's memories of his family, you immerse yourself in the perception of each moment that ever happened to Ted and his relatives! The painter is like a "camera" that takes and saves what it sees! But his paintigs are not a simple display of facts , they are the inexhastible imagination through the labyrinth of which Ted will guide you with pleasure. Ted is a real collector of things - old newspapers, the things that inspired him to create the paintings etc! Two hours at his place are like one minute and you want to go back there again for a new tour that we surely will do in near future!
