Didn't actually stay here but we decided we were gonna spend a day in Chester on the way home from holidaying in Wales and read somewhere online that this place offered a place to leave luggage for the day via prior arrangement so duly rang them and they were more than helpful and offered this service at a cost of £5 for a small suitcase and a holdall for the day was more than good value as no train station offer this facility anymore and didn't want to cart said bags all around Chester, upon returning to collect bags the owner (Chris) said we were more than welcome to sit down an watch TV for a while whilst we waited for the train which we did and conversed with the guests,

All in all a diamond of a fella offering us a place to store our luggage

I only stayed 1 night en route to Liverpool, and was slightly worried about some of the reviews, but I needn't have been, because it was as good as it gets for a budget hostel in the centre of lovely Chester. I can't speak for the dorms as I was in a private en suite double (upgraded from a single because it was quiet :-) ). It is basic, but a very comfy bed, scrupulously clean in bathroom and everywhere else. A perfectly equipped kitchen where you can cook, and make free tea and coffee.. Very friendly staff, (Chris?), welcoming and cheerful. And all this for £25, a bargain!!!

I want to start by saying that both the girl and guy working here were lovely. They were really friendly, understanding and relaxed.
Having said that, this place is budget accommodation at its most unabashed. The beds are decent and the bedding clean. However the bunk I was sleeping on was badly damaged, part of it was only attached by wire. The showers were good, once I figured out how to use them. Though there was a hole in the door where someone had apparently kicked it. And the paint on the walls and ceiling is in desperate need of an update. The only mirror was in the bathroom, so use girls trying to do make up or hair was a bit frustrating. I was a little concerned that the code to our dorm was just the same code as was used for the front door except with an extra digit.
But for what it was it was decent, though I've stayed at better for cheaper, and for a short stay it was pretty good.

The location of the hostel is a very admirable feature of this hostel, my experience of a 3 night stay in the Chester Backpackers hostel was very positive, the showers were hot, the beds were comfortable, there was free fast connected WiFi available throughout the hostel and the staff were very friendly and although this hostel is a little outdated and could be improved in terms of its up keep, it is a good short time accommodation for a budget break in Chester.

The only good/positive comment I can make about the Backpackers Hostel is that the young guy on reception is first class - but totally wasted working at this location! He was polite, friendly and full of local knowledge - nothing was a problem.
The actual hostel itself however is shabby and rundown - it's seen better days. The smell of damp runs through the whole place. Peeling paint, damaged ceilings, dirty showers and the self catering kitchen is dark and grubby. Bedding was clean enough though - but there's a few places where carpets are stained and your feet stick to the floor. Chatted with another visitor who pointed out that one of the fire escape exits was also blocked - as shown in images.
Don't let the owners 'pretty' online images of this place fool you.

Hello,

Many thanks for your feedback, particularity for your nice comments about me. I have just taken over the running of the hostel and I have a full schedule of repairs which will be undertaken quite soon.

The property is regularly cleaned throughout but I also plan to revamp the hostel over the coming weeks and months - new floors, carpets, painting etc.

I hope that one day you will come back and be pleasantly surprised at what I have managed to achieve.

Kind regards,

Christopher.
