Popped in on the off chance and had the most amazing plaice dish, such a friendly atmosphere, brilliant staff and gorgeous food. Will be back for a special occasion that is coming up soon as the whole experience is of such high quality.

Great central location made so much easier as the hotel parks your car in their private car park. Our room was well equipped, comfortable bed and new en suite bathroom. However the room was small and at the rear of the hotel so was quite nosy from the extractors from the kitchens. Breakfast was excellent.

Room tip: Not at the rear of the hotel

Came in for Sunday lunch to the grill. Felt the set up was conducive of a school buffet. Place was cramped, drinks to ages to arrive and very small serving of meat which was undercooked. Came in with son who was 11, but charged £20+ for him when he should have been a child rate. Raised this with the waiter who went to chat to manager - the manager could not be bothered to discuss with me directly. I didn’t really care about to be honest about paying extra. It was the principle that a ‘reputable’ place would not make clear that children need smaller plates and that the manager of the restaurant would not personally deal with the situation (what else are they there for?)

TIP FOR MANAGEMENT - you work in hospitality, talk to your customers at every opportunity, especially if there is an issue. Wasted visit and money.

We stay at The Royal Castle every year for Regatta in August for a week and usually manage to get a couple of nights throughout the year too.
A family run hotel which is as popular with locals as it is with it's loyal guests as once you have stayed, eaten, called in for a coffee or a drink you are immediately made to feel so welcome its always like going home.
Food is quality and portions generous and great value. Children and dogs are welcome in both bars downstairs but not in the Grill Room restaurant upstairs, if you are a hotel guest there is the library and also another small area where staff are happy to serve your breakfast with your dogs present (I've heard the owners asked if the dogs want sausages !) During Regatta the Hotel is usually always booked sometimes two years in advance its that popular, but always worth asking or being put on a waiting list. The setting of the Hotel is great, right in the heart of Dartmouth with lovely river views, we lay in bed listening to the live music from the Bandstand one evening which was lovely. Despite the wonderful decor, views, great food and drink the Royal Castle's finest asset is The Staff, they are just brilliant, from reception, bar staff, restaurant, housekeeping, nothing is too much trouble and no matter how busy they are, and Regatta is a mad time, they are consistently helpful and smiling. We were particularly impressed with a young man (maybe 14 or 15 years old, leaving the kitchen with an order and was promptly bumped into by someone dancing to the live music dropping some of the food onto the floor, he just smiled and returned to the kitchen, no rolling of the eyes or cross words, a really great attitude especially in one so young. This is a great place to visit at any time of year, to be comfortable, eat great food and relax, with great walks and places of interest such as Agatha Christie's house which you get a river taxi to, you can go paddle boarding, kayaking, steam boat tours, fishing, steam train trip, a real British getaway.

Room tip: River view rooms are very special but all rooms are beautifully presented.

Cannot fault the location if you want to explore the town. The hotel itself is circa 1630 and as such has the quirks and peculiarities of such buildings. Wonky floors, well in the room right at the top it did. If you struggle to walk, climb stairs or dragging a heavy suitcase, it is a long way up to the 4th floor. Using a squared spiral stair case, although there is seats to rest on the way.Expect traffic as the Grill Room restaurant is on the 1st floor. Make use of the Porter service.
With 1 Restaurant and two Bars serving food, it is very popular so the foyer gets busy during meal times with coming and going patrons.Breakfast can be served in your room at no extra cost which is good and starts serving before the restaurant opens, if you are heading out early.
The valet Service for the guests is quick. Cannot fault the staff on any grounds they are friendly, polite and eager to help.
The shower struggles if everyone is showering/bathing in the hotel ate the same time in my case between 9 and 10pm

Room tip: Room 31 on 4th floor no real view except the sky and bit of a roof but out the way so more peaceful.
