“Best seafood restaurant in the area”
Reviewed 18 January 2012

First class seafood menu, excellent service and reasonable prices in a traditional fishermens' pub right by the water in the village of Cockwood. A summertime drinking spot where you can sit outside on the patio or sea wall and watch the boats

“An excellent value New Year's Eve dinner with excellent service”
Reviewed 5 January 2012

We have been visiting this lovely old pub/restaurant for over 20 years whenever we are in the area. It has lots of character and because it is over 300 years old it may be a little 'battered' in some areas, but their newish extension including an upper gallery fit in well. Our New Year's eve dinner was in the upper gallery and the service was even better than usual. Our waitress has worked there for some 13 years proving that she is a happy worker which always helps service levels. A manager was also much in evidence which can only help. Other reports about being seated in the upper area and not receiving good service in the past cannot be normal, as our visit was on the busiest night of the year with a full restaurant and they did well!

As for value for money it was great. At only £35 per head for a cold starter, fillet steak (which was cooked very rare as requested), and a very professional looking pudding of three different items we were delighted. The choice of wines was good and the bottle we enjoyed was not expensive.

We normally have seafood when visiting the Anchor as this is what they specialise in, and that is always good, but our last visit shows that they can also do meat! For people who complain that there are too many seafood/fish items on the menu when there are other options available is very unfair. It is a very extensive menu and the new management have done well to preserve the style.

We will be visiting again in future months.

One reviewer complained that the car park was too small, well yes it is, but there is nothing that can be done about that given the compact nature of the lovely village of Cockwood. My suggestion would be to come early when spaces on the road can usually be found even if the pub's car park is full.

Only one tip can really be offered up and that is about the barman. He is such a miserable character and could do with a little training or future career advice.

“Really good food, excellent value, great service”
Reviewed 16 December 2011

Went for a Christmas meal, was £20 for 3 courses. Mussels starter was bigger than some main courses I've had. The beef was lovely and rare, proper Yorkshire pud, good roasted pots and veg that still had their colour. All was obviously freshly cooked, not reheated. The desert was fantastic. Someone had the cheeseboard, it looked more like a ploughmans there was so much.

The staff were really friendly and helpful (we had a couple of fussy eaters who don't do nuts or dairy).

All in all would really recommend the journey out there.

“Disinterested staff..”
Reviewed 13 December 2011

Food was very well presented and tasty, even though expensive for what it was. Staff could have made such a difference to our visit, but got the feeling that both bar and food staff would have much rather been elsewhere. It wasn't even as though they were busy!

“As good as ever”
Reviewed 20 November 2011

Having just seen a few of the poor reviews I thought I must just balance this out, because I have nothing but praise for the Anchor, who even though they have changed hands are still led fantastically well by Paul, the Manager, who knows his wines, ales and food very well. If more pubs and restaurants had managers like him this world would be a better place. We come down 3 times a year every year for a few days, and we always look forward to our evening here.

One recent critic said the portions had got smaller. This just isn't the case. They have got bigger if anything, and I can put my food away, but I was starting to struggle on our most recent visit in November. Yes the menu has changed, and I missed something I have enjoyed for many years on the menu, but change happens. The menu was excellent, with a wonderful variety. Another critic had said it was loaded in favour of fish lovers. Well, being on the very beautiful River Exe estuary I should jolly well hope it was. If it wasn't I would worry. Their was plenty of meat options and vegetarian too.

We live 270 miles away and so we can only visit for a total of about 9 - 10 days each year, but if we were closer we would frequent the Anchor an awful lot more.

We cannot wait for our next visit in 2012.
