A fascinating and lovely gastropub in the heart of Winchester. The atmosphere is quite quirky, whilst the food is delicious. I enjoyed the battered haddock and triple cooked chips immensely. The service was lovely.

Rooms in the annexe are not suitable for those vaguely infirm - access is via a narrow and steep staircase, with no lift, it being an old townhouse. Breakfast is good quality but limited menu - no cold meat or cheese selection for example. This is a pub with rooms rather than a hotel, so there is no sitting room for residents. That said the bar is as atmospheric as it was 50 years ago.

Last year I ate here more often than any other venue in the UK including 3 Christmas dinners (not all at once.) The set 3-course menu is a joy to eat and exceptional value, sure the portions are not large but that is not what it is about - the food here is about quality, not quantity. The wine list is very good and they pull a good pint. The staff are helpful and the pub itself takes you back in time.

This is a lovely pub, but the food let’s it down - I ordered the lamb rack and it turned up with 2 tiny chops, half of each which was unrendered fat. So for £22 I had a 2 mouthfuls of lamb. The dauphinois potatoes were nice too as were the vegetables but again very small portions. The staff were not able to manage it, going back and forth to ask their manager how to deal with it. I asked for two more chops but the kitchen ‘couldn’t do it’. I was offered a free dessert and ordered the cheeseboard, but was charged a £4 surcharge under the guise of a ‘side salad’ on the bill. Very disappointing food and not great service. Won’t be going back for food.

A very friendly atmosphere, with helpful staff. However, the drinks and in particular, the food, are bit on the expensive side. If you're not short on cash, then I can recommend this establishment. Overall, this is a fine place to relax and enjoy yourself.
