Perfect location, food is beautiful and rooms are lovely. Rooms 35/36 which look out onto the lake and mountains are stunning. The most comfortable bed in the lakes and the best sleep I’ve had in months.

Thank-you for your five star review relating to your experience at Hillthwaite. We do strive to ensure all bedding is of top quality and have sourced beds from only the best suppliers, so it is great that you have pin-pointed the comfortable nights sleep you had here at Hillthwaite. Thank you for your other positive comments, all of which are greatly appreciated by myself and the entire team. Please do come see us again.

This really is a stunning hotel, set midway between Bowness and Windermere. The owners have clearly put a lot of time and thought into the hotel, all the public areas and bedrooms are tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean. The grounds are immaculate with stunning views over the lake. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The hotel itself exceeded all out expectations. The food however, was really not to our liking and we felt it just didn't match the high standards of the hotel. The chef seems to have a thing about "pickling". We had pickled cherries with a starter, pickled blueberries in a salad, pickled mushrooms in a main course and there was even pickled beetroot with a breakfast choice. The one combination I couldn't cope with was melted chocolate with baked mushroom, that really didn't work for me. We are from the South, so maybe Northern taste buds are different. As much as I would like to have given a 5 star rating because this hotel deserves it, our disappointment with the food just won't let me do it.

Room tip: Room 16 is stunning

Many thanks for taking the time to share your valued feedback, it is very pleasing to read your highly positive comments relating to the property, decor, location and cleanliness. In recent years we have invested heavily in getting Hillthwaite improved and refurbished to the highest standard, with further improvements still to come. I am sorry that on this occasion the food let it down. We are in the process of creating new menus for the Autumn/ Winter season and will be introducing a more traditional style of menu, with hearty cuisine and simple (yet still tasty) flavour combinations. So i hope you will not be put off coming to stay with us once again. thank you for all your positive comments and we look forward to having the opportunity to welcome you back.

We have just returned from a wonderful 2 night stay at the hotel on a bed, breakfast and dinner option. The food and accommodation was to a high standard and the location was great for exploring the Lakes or just sitting on the terrace looking out from the vantage point on the hill. However I felt compelled to write my first review of any stay due to the very high standards of the team at the Hillthwaite. From arrival to departure everything was perfect and everyone we met during our stay was so welcoming and friendly whilst being all times super professional. A wonderful asset to the hotel and we will certainly return again soon for this very reason. THANK YOU!

Hi ShaunPC. Many thanks for taking the time out of your day to post your five star review. The location of Hillthwaite certainly does provide us with a magnificent position and some breath-taking views. However, like you say it is the staff that really set us apart, we are very lucky to have such a great team, many of whom have been with us for many years and always go the extra mile for all our guests. So i am delighted that on this occasion it was no different, and i will certainly pass this feedback on to them and i am sure everyone would be very pleased to welcome you back again some time soon. Thank-you again for your 5 star review.

From check in in to check out all of the staff were amazing. One of the housekeeping team even left us some glasses and berries in our room having seen a bottle of bubbles which we had. We stayed in an occasion room which was stunning with great views of the lake - well worth the upgrade. The pool was rather small and cold but pleasant after a long day of walking and sadly the sauna wasn't working. The only negative we had about our stay was the food. The first evening we were waiting an awful long time to be served tough dry pork, only to be told that is how it should be served....
The next night was another long wait and I was served a fillet steak (req med rare) which was tough as old boots as a result of 'being under the hot plate too long'. By the time my fresh steak had came, my partner was long since finished with her main.
we then had another long wait for our deserts.
i would definitely recommend this hotel... just maybe eat offsite!

Room tip: ask for an occasion room!

The hotel is very comfortable. The service and food is excellent. It is exactly 0.9 miles from Windermere and the same from Bo'ness and on the steep side of a hill, so walking involves quite a lot of 'up'.

Room tip: Front rooms for the view. Main hotel for convenience. Car parking can be tricky.
