Description: Hutong opened on 26th June 2013 on Level 33 of The Shard, serving contemporary Northern Chinese cuisine. Hutong takes its inspiration from the dishes served in the imperial palaces of old Peking. Based on the Lu school cuisine of Shandong Province, renowned for its seafood and vinegars, and with influences from Sichuan Province, famous for its fiery spices and peppers, the menu at Hutong artfully captures the subtlety and surprises of Northern Chinese cooking. The restaurant is named after Beijing's ancient hutongs - the now fast-disappearing narrow lanes which criss-crossed the city revealing its old family houses, their grand courtyards and life within. Signature dishes include Red Lantern soft-shell crab and Crispy de-boned lamb ribs as well as Roasted Peking duck, considered by many to be the best in London. Hutong's beautiful Shanghai Bar is the perfect place for cocktails before or after dinner.

Food was very good and they were accommodating with kids not liking spicy foods. View is spectacular.

I've been to Hutong twice, once last year in September and again this week and I have had wonderfully pleasant experiences on both occasions. The staff we encountered were exceptionally welcoming and very accommodating with pre-arranged requests for a birthday platter. The staff even sang happy birthday to my mother which I thought was a sweet touch!

I will say that it pays off to plan what you'd like to order beforehand, so definitely give the menu a look before you go! I ordered a chicken dish last time and it was far too spicy, but the fried noodles I had this time were excellent. The mango puddings are to die for!

The bar side can get a bit rowdy, but staff were generally very vigilant and managed to get loud diners to quieten down. Depending on what you order, the food can be a bit on the expensive side, but given the stunning view and excellent ambiance, I'd say it's worth it.

We booked Hutong to celebrate our son's 18th birthday. We wanted an experience we would remember. It started so well. The view was breathtaking and the staff were attentive. So far so good. The menu looked great and the prices were eyewatering but hey, this is London and what else do you expect. So we chose our food and our drinks and sat back to watch the sunset. Idyllic. But then - the service was so quick, we may as well have been in Macdonalds. The food was no more than average, we could have had the same in our local high street, so very disappointing. As the sun went down, we realised that the lighting was so 'atmospheric' that it was hard to see our food or our companions. I watched the waiters using the torches on their iPhones to write down orders, then as the table next to us were served their Peking duck, one waiter had to use his i-watch torch to help the other one to carve the duck. Really? We smiled and made the most of our experience because it was a special birthday and we wanted happy memories but we were out of that place, having been made to feel rushed and insignificant, within two hours with a bill of £300 for 3. I don't mind paying over the odds for special but this was truly an awful experience and it makes me feel foolish and exploited.

Visited for dinner - first time last Wednesday, March 28th.

Location offers awesome views over London but not much else. Food was no more than average. Noodles tasted like they were poured from a package and heated. Aromatic beef dry and boring.

Service all over the place - when we needed someone there as no one in sight yet we seemed to have floor staff buzzing around us to remove items from the table. One couldn't help but get the sense they just wanted us out as quickly as possible to prepare for the next sitting.

Will be in no hurry back.

Had a lovely view of the Thames and London whilst enjoying our food. The dim sum was amazing especially the black truffle and shiitake mushroom buns. The service was great with friendly waiters who were very attentive. There is a service charge but you would probably leave that as a tip anyway because of the food and experience. Booking online was quick and easy also.
