we had a delicious lunch here - the food was excellent and a little bit different from your average cafe. the prices were not too bad either.
The only downside was the service which was very slow - we were not in a rush but if we had been we would have been very annoyed at how slow it was !

Cafe no 8 is right by the reception of
the york art gallery and is a good place for a light lunch after a mornings art viewing. The gallery has interesting ceramics and some good paintings and has recently been refurbished. The cafe serves interesting toasted sandwiches and a hot dish of the day. Friendly staff, good service and very smart premises.

Firstly the good bits:-
The food is always good (we have lunch here every time we go to York).
Secondly the not-so-good bits:-
The cafe is open to the Art Gallery entrance so every time a person leaves the door open the cafe gets a blast of cold air because "Mangagement" insist on keeping the door to the cafe open in case people think it's closed - even though it has full size glass doors and there's an 'A' board outside with their offering ie. people can see diners!
We noticed that our white melamine table was grubby so I used a napkin to wipe the table which ended up being black. Literally. Because we were in the "chill-zone" by the open door we pounced on a vacated table away from the blast when we had tea/coffee after lunch. The table hadn't been wiped (had food en-grimed (??) on it) so I did the same thing - wiped the table with a dry napkin. Same result. BLACK! The waitresses squirt stuff after customers vacate (mostly) but swish the cloth in an "S" shape missing 1/3rd at least. I don't really want to share my table with trillions of bacteria thank you.

Went for a late lunch with the husband. Finally ordered after several attempts...took at least 10 minutes to place the order. The ladies were very pleasant just fairly slow.
When the order arrived the coffee were ok but the cheese & ham toasties was exceptionally meagre and at £7 must be close to caviar costs in price! I recommended you go any where else in our fabulous city as I will certainly not be going here again....and yes I made my concerns known to the management who too the bill down to £5 for the smallest toast I've ever been served.

Hello Paula,

Thank you for your review.

I would like to point out that you did in fact order from the "Children's Menu". Obviously the portions are a lot smaller -priced at £3.50 per item which includes a glass of milk or juice - which I think is very reasonable for a child.

This is marked very clearly on the menu and isn't really intended for grown-ups.

I am however confused that you were charged £7 for this. It would be great if you could check your receipt as an error may have been made on the till. If this is the case, I would be happy to return the difference.

Best regards,

Chris

Casual cafe style restaurant, but not casual cafe standard food.
Slightly quirky food combinations which worked really well- pear starter with blue cheese and sweet pecan crumb, hubby had mushroom and horseradish pate which could have done with a little more kick, but melt in the mouth featherblade of beef and shoulder of lamb mains which couldn't have been better.
Washed down with a lovely bottle of Rioja crianza.
No room for dessert. £80 well spent
