I have a tendency to visit Tripadvisor's top rated Cafe's/Coffee Houses and tend to be in agreement with the masses.
Rarely do I offer a review on these establishments, but Wheldrakes has a personality that fits its surroundings.
A 15 minute journey from the Train Station, walk past the Minster, through The Shambles. Not central, but still relatively in the thick of things.
They offer a multitude of Coffees from a three bean blend they roast themselves. No Pour Over option, I would imagine their isn't a Barista but my Cappuccino was pleasant and competent. Suitable enough for the Coffee connoisseur - ranging from £2.40 - £2.90 a cup.
An English breakfast consisting of "Awarded" Bacon & Sausages, Eggs, Bread, Beans, Black Pudding, Beans, Tomato & Relish set me back around £7.50
Excellent value for quite exceptional ingredients, the sausages and bacon were excellent.
The front of the Cafe is covered in cakes and Scones, around 12 variations. It would appear they bake some if not all of these themselves. Naturally we had to try a slice or two...however we weren't expecting these to arrive with cream, icing sugar and a very sweet sauce. I don't think I've ever been served a cake in a Cafe in this manner, think the standards been set now. Around £3.50 a serving from what I could gather.
The interior is quite typical, coffee quotes, little metal sheep etc. Cleanliness is obviously a priority and the layout maximises customer space.
Service was attentive without being overbearing, quick and efficient. The owners were friendly and the staff appeared to be enjoying their work.
York is an elegant, hospitable City. This is it's Cafe.
