Had a lovely family meal. Reasonable price for a city restaurant. Steaks were very good. Very friendly staff. Will return

Had a rare steak, wife medium, both cooked very well, succulent and tasty. However starters .... wife had breaded mushrooms and I had nachos with chilli beef, both looked like they had just been thrown on plate and warmed up in the microwave, wouldn’t recommend. Overall ok,

We needed something close to the Theatre Royal, so our choice of restaurant was largely based on location and we booked with an open mind as reviews online were mixed.
First impressions were good ; beautiful old building, Lambretta in the window, comfy sofas, freeplay soul and Motown Wurlitzer, statues and pics covering the walls to match. No proper ale, though, just lager, cider and a "creamflow" . Decent wine though.
What did jangle us a bit was the acoustics and other people. There was a party happy to let their children run around screaming until the staff asked them not to, and it seemed everyone else was shouting to each other from 2 feet away. We have never been in such a noisy restaurant.
I think it's because we were there before 6 because when the lights were dimmed, candles lit and the music turned up, the atmosphere was calmer and quieter and enjoyable.
Also, there is passing trade, people having a drink or two after shopping, and some of these were a bit crude and noisy. Not Soulville's fault.
To be fair, any restaurant's at its best in the evening and I'm making an observation rather than a complaint.
The main event's obviously the food and this they succeeded at in spades. The menu's pretty good, especially for carnivores like me. Loads to choose from and descriptions of the cut. Even a diagram on the menu back showing where each one comes from on the cow.
I asked for rare steak and it came perfectly cooked and delicious. 16oz was a gut buster though.
I've seen poor reviews about the staff here, but they were really welcoming, efficient, helpful and pleasant...even lending us a phone charger.
In summary, we enjoyed our visit, thought the food was superb prices reasonable, the wine lovely, the staff great, and we would definitely eat there again.

We love Soulville the food is always amazing and the steaks done exactly the way we desire. We had our first date at Soulville and we go for every anniversary. Perfect romantic atmosphere and wonderful old music playing in the background.
