Owner description: Oxford Castle Unlocked explores the 1000-years of Oxford's History. Led by one of our costumed characters, the rich history of the castle with a prison at its heart will be revealed to you. Climb St. George's Tower and take in the stunning views before descending into the atmospheric crypt, along the 18th century prison wing and into archaic man-made mound.

A very interesting piece of Oxfords history, its incredible what the people who were held prisoner in this place actually endured. A guided tour is given which is very informative and certainly an eye opener. Well worth a visit.

We were staying at the hotel next to the castle and went to have a look see. We were luck enough to be the only two people on our guided tour of the castle. Princess Matilda was excellent and very informative (as well as being a very nice young lady) who took the time and trouble to explain the history of the tower and surrounding city. An excellent way to spend an hour and we would both highly recommend you take the tour when you’re in the city.

having just completed a boring open top bus ride around some rather run down parts of oxford with a lacklustre guide we were in need of some excitement and entertainment. enter rowland jencks our wonderful guide. despite being incarcerated in the prison since elizabethan times the lovely rowland managed to be very funny, upbeat and gloriously entertaining. his script was brilliant and it was obvious that he loved his job. thank you rowland for making our day, and for being so patient with both my husband and myself as we climbed all those steps with our rickety old kness. you were fabulous!

We were greeted by our guide Solomon wisden, who not only looked the part actually made you feel as if you had been transported back in time, his knowledge of history and the quirky little goings on at the castle and prison made the visit memorable. I would throughly recommend this activity for all, there are lots of steps to climb though so probably not if your unable to climb, or have health issues.

Although the visit was informative (and I did learn a lot), the tour was a bit gimmicky with people being put in the stocks and others throwing toy rats at them. Probably well worth taking kids but not really an adult tour. The cafe next door took 40 minutes to heat four bowls of soup!!
