First stayed here summer of 2014 and returned for an overnight stay, on our way to our Easter cottage rental, because of our previous visit. We weren't disappointed, lovely friendly staff and excellent food, well served. We chose the hotel because we have 2 dogs and it's a perfect place for them, a great welcome and no extra charges for their stay. The mews rooms are given to dog owners which allows a quick exit into the lovely grounds.

Room Tip: The mews rooms are given to dog owners but can be noisy if there is a function on, the room is just...

Nice hotel, staff friendly, unfortunately we were overcharged by the restuarant by £16! Someone else's drinks and a pudd! Should have checked bill more thoroughly before leaving, I know! Receptionist is first class, restuarant staff friendly, however the older guy was forgetful on numerous occasions, wine, menus and food! Never mind! Room was cosy, called Oak room, just 1 issue you can hear everything that was going on downstairs from the bar to the early staff in the morning. Food (when the older guy remembered) was superb! Well done chef, oysters in tempura to die for and so is the treacle tart, fish and chips was a huge portion and yummy!

Room Tip: Go for a room out of the main building, or as far from the bar as you can

We stayed here for 1 sunday night over the easter Bank Holiday. It was very busy on arrival at 4pm as the Sunday Lunch was very popular. We now know why - the food and general atmosphere was excellent.
It is a minute off the A14 (but you would never know) and within 5 minutes of Bury St Edmunds. The hotel is old world character. So large wood tables, big chairs, wood fire, different rooms for eating etc. not everything is new and perfect - but not a problem and all adds into the experience.
All of the staff, despite being very busy, were helpful and friendly.
Outside grounds were lovely and a little "farm" with animals just off the car park.
Our room was large and the only negative (very minor) was not many options for channels on the TV and no radio.
But as I say minor and we will go back again.

Room Tip: A house in the main house has character

Stayed for 2 nights at the beginning of March. It is a few minutes by car from Bury St Edmunds. Set in beautiful grounds and with an open air pool. The hotel is oozing with character and all the staff were absolutely charming and went out of their way to be as helpful possible. We were especially lucky as the weather was glorious and we spent a lovely couple of hours sitting in the sun on our last day by the pool.
On the minus side, although our room was full of character we did find the it a tad small and with very little room for clothes, but as we were only there for 2 nights it was perfectly OK. Lovely restaurant and breakfasts were excellent, but we were a little disappointed with the evening meals.
However, overall thoroughly recommended and great value with our Secret Escapes deal.

From the moment we arrived it was such a relaxing and cosy feel. The little extra touches made all the difference (our teddy in the chair, local mags to read, and extra nice biscuits in their special place!) Evening meal was lovely, however they did forget to bring our desserts and after 25mins wait and needing prompting the waiter brought them but mine was inedible-( treacle tart was cold with soggy pastry+ice cream was definitely not clotted cream) unfortunately. Cosy bed and fabulous room. Breakfast was faultless and most enjoyable, waitress was so lovely and friendly. Thank you, we will definitely stay here again should we be in the area.
