Stayed here with my mum in November. We had the top priced room which was lovely - at the top of the hotel, quite and spacious. Refreshments in the room were very good and the beds very comfortable. We arrived early and were able to go to our room straight away which was very nice. The hotel was really well kept, I noticed that the decor was in pristine condition and it certainly looked like the management ensure all areas are kept clean and tidy. We decided to eat in the bar rather than the restaurant - it was a Friday night and VERY busy so had trouble finding a table to sit and eat at. However, the food was really tasty and plenty of it. Would recommend this hotel for sure and look forward to staying again in the future.

This must be the best hotel in Abergavenny and I recommend it. The staff were very friendly and highly attentive, the food was good (reasonably expensive) and the whole building is beautifully maintained. The executive bedroom size is quite small (it's an older building) and after our first night we did ask to move to another executive bedroom which was better positioned in the building. The hotel staff could not have been more helpful in arranging this. The bedroom we moved into was also marginally bigger with a sofa! The beds were very comfortable apart from the heat that seemed to be generated through sleeping on the mattress (plastic sheeting underneath perhaps?). We enjoyed our stay and I doubt you could do better in Abergavenny.

Room Tip: Go for a Superior size room if you can afford it

Stayed for work for the second time knowing the hotel would be spot on as before, but this time their restaurant was also recommended by a colleague.

It did not disappoint. I had pâté to start followed by loin of venison for main. Pâté isn’t hard to get right but the bread here is always very good as a result of the bakery they also operate so it was a no brainier. The venison was rare and served with sweet parsnips, greens and roast potatoes with a drizzle of rich gravy - all of which worked well.

I had a glass of house red with the meal which was pleasant enough for the (reasonable) price.

I’d stop here anyway as the rooms are very comfortable and they have their own car park, but it’s great to know there’s a nice meal waiting for me too next time.

We've stayed here many times, and all in all it's a really nice hotel. However, this time a few things marred our stay. The set dinner menu has no chicken, beef or lamb option - the only "meat" option being duck. We're ok with it, but not everyone is. Also, no vegetables accompany the main course, other than some red cabbage on the plate. The waitress gave us some complementary veg, but it is unusual for a main course to not have a side order of veg as part of the dish. Next - breakfast. Waiter took our order in the bar. We had to ask him for juice, and tea/coffee. Maybe a language barrier. The breakfast then took 30 mins to arrive, and then eggs order wrong, no toast, marmalade or butter. The toast arrived, then no butter. Butter arrived, then no marmalade! Dear oh dear. We laughed it off but this hotel used to have high standards. I related the issues on checkout, but got the feeling I just as well have been speaking to the toast (when it arrived). Given it's not cheap there, it should be far better.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your continued feedback.

I am sorry to read you were disappointed duck was the only meat option on The Angel menu (despite you liking duck). Many of our vegetables are always side options (and this is displayed on the menu), however due to your dissatisfaction, I trust you enjoyed the complimentary sides of potatoes we offered.

Is is a further disappointment to read you had to wait 30 minutes for breakfast, the wrong order was brought and you had to re-order.

I will make sure your comments are shared with our training manager and in our weekly management meeting.

I hope this has not marred your impression of The Angel and we can welcome you back in the future.

Kind regards,

Charlotte Griffiths
