We made a mistake and went for a Salsa evening on the 28th September with friends from Canada and Kendal. The event wasn't advertised on their website - just on their Facebook page. It was awful. We had pre-paid to go. When we arrived I noticed there were young girls arriving in sports attire. We were given red wrist bands to wear and shown into the main hall. It was set out very prettily. "Ah ha" I said to my guest, "we appear to be the first ones to arrive". We got some beers (a poor selection of two) and a jug of Sangria. down we sat and waited in some anticipation for the other guest to arrive. First a couple, then another, then...well, no one! that was it. All the other tables were empty and I must admit, it looked pretty sad. Musak played over the speakers while menu options needed to be chosen. I had a bad feeling we'd been duped. And 'lo!, the girls we'd seen earlier in sports gear were making an entrance right in front of our table dressed in shorts and tee shirts. It turned out that we had to witness a junior skipping club demonstration (yes – skipping!). This went on in fits and starts for an hour or so during which, the rather fine meal was served. My husband and others were clearly deeply embaressed, he said he felt like Nero and only just caught himself from throwing bones and food leftovers to the performers in reluctant appreciation. Our food went cold as we couldn't eat while the performance was on. I asked a member of staff what was going on and why this strange spectacle wasn't advertised on their facebook page and why wasn’t on the hotel’s main website. She shrugged it off with the age old response, "I'm only the bar person". The chef looked on disgruntled; "if this thing flops again I'm moving on". The salsa classes when they started were quite good. After a while, the more experienced dancers (one from Elgin) took over, and dominated the floor, some with obvious distain at us newbies. The place was meant to close at 11:45 but we couldn't take the it any more and called for our £80 taxi and left at half nine for home. I felt really bad for our guests and out pal from Kendal who was hoping for a good night as it was his birthday. WHY DIDN'T THE MANAGER CANCEL THE EVENT WHEN THEY KNEW THAT IS WAS GOING TO BE BADLY ATTENDED? Why doesn't the owner reply to my emails for an explanation? I can only think that she doesn't care. We won't be back and I'd advise you think very carefully if you pre-book for an event advertised on Facebook.
