Going to the artists trail this past weekend I did my usual and rang to book into the Selkirk Arms unfortunately I couldn't get a room so starting searching for an alternative. We had a really lucky find in Gladstone House. A lovely couple Hillary and Gordon own this a couple who are retired and moved to kirkcudbright 15 years ago. Gordon is originally a lawyer from Stockton on tees where I'm from a small world definitely.
The breakfast was lovely Hillary makes all the home made jams and marmalades served. She also makes all the accompaniments for breakfast. Her homegrown rhubarb cooked with orange is brilliant, dried apricots steeped in earl grey tea with cherries wow and her melon with grated ginger this morning superb. Her rhubarb jam was fabulous should sell jars of it for us to take away with us.
Gordon makes his own bread brown and white. I've never seen Don my husband enjoy the bread toasted the last couple of mornings. Preferring to eat more of this bread than actually eat the full Scottish breakfast. A nice touch on the cooked breakfast was the black pudding served on a slice of cooked apple lovely.
They do evening meals as well but we just had the bed and breakfast deal.
Lovely decor using furniture from there own house when they moved here. Spend time talking to you not just a paying customer. Came as strangers left feeling like friends lovely to be able to talk to someone from my hometown.
Thank you both
