Description: Award-winning newcomer to the Edinburgh fine dining scene, Le Roi Fou is an intimate restaurant and bar, which showcases inventive French & Scottish dishes, presented beautifully. There is an expertly crafted wine list, while the small, cosy interior boasts a curved bar with seating, and a small dining room room at the back, perfect for romantic meals. Bold, inventive recipes are served up on the Le Roi Fou menu, utilising the best seasonal produce. To start, there is grilled Galician octopus with watermelon and aged sherry vinegar, as well as hand-cut beef fillet steak tartare. Sumptuous Scottish flavours can be found in mains like grilled Scottish halibut with wild girolle and Swiss chard, and there are classic favourites such as seared new season lamb rack with mint-infused sauce. There are also continuously updating chef's tasting menus. Puddings at Le Roi Fou in Edinburgh include comforting classics like poached rhubarb and pistachio crumble with Borders crème fraîche.

Really enjoyed our visit last night, the restaurant was warm and cosy and the staff were lovely. The pace of the service was just right and the food was amazing. I had the seared foie gras to start, it was perfection!!! I would return for that dish alone. We were a bit pushed for time so couldn't participate in the tasting menu but at £50 a head it seemed to be great value. Can't wait to go back, it's now my new favourite restaurant in Edinburgh

Wow! For starters we had papardell in mushroom broth and carrot soup, entrees were cod and salmon, all perfectly prepared. Delicious wine, reasonable prices, and truly professional service! A very cozy dining room. We plan to return for our last night in Edinburgh

Easter Friday evening and pouring with rain when we arrived at the restaurant. Our wet coats were whisked away and we were seated by the window looking in to Forth Street. As soon as we were seated we were treated to an amuse bouche and our Pre dinner drinks sought. All four of us then opted for the tasting menu which was a delight. Each course was excellent but we especially enjoyed the halibut with wild garlic beure blanc. Also enjoyed scallop and white asparagus and a couple of Loch Fyne Oysters. Service was superb and attentive but not obtrusive. Enjoyed it so much we were the last to leave. Absolutely will return. This is the kind of food and ambiance that we love. The same meal and service would cost double in Hong Kong or London so not to be missed.

This was an especial dinner for me and my wife. I booked table for two 1 month ago (on 22/02/18). Le Roi Fou only had available first or last time. Be aware with this. Whether you want to go, book with enough time in advance. As we went walking, no problem with parking. Beverages were offered before starters and dessert (champagne, beer,...). Nevertheless, you can feel the gap between courses, despite the efficient and friendly staff. The steak tartar is not the best I have ever tasted which was not prepared in front of us. The best I have tasted was in Madrid, prepared in front of us (‘Capilla de la bolsa’ restaurant) where you can choose the amount of each ingredient you wish. But our dinner was improving when the time was going on. Good wine. Wonderful meat (veal, Guinea fowl) as a main course. A nice dessert with a Pedro Ximenez sherry made the rest to put an smile on our faces.

For that special meal, make sure you book in advance. This is a small cosy place and popular. I see from a difference review that there is a lunch menu of reasonable cost, but the evening meal will set you back a bit. That said, we had a super memorable meal with faultless service in a quietly busy ambiance. There's no nasty background music to compete with either.
Unusually we chose the same courses: scallops with braised salsify and brown crab sauce followed by Veal with artichoke. The courses were of a reasonable size with three large scallops for the hors d'heuvre. For dessert we had rhubarb cheesecake with salted & black sesame ginger ice-cream. This was delicious -- not too sweet with a balanced interesting taste. Surprisingly the light biscuity part of the cheesecake was on top!
With our champagne to celebrate our special occasion, we were given a delicious entree.
We will certainly come again.
