Owner description: Edinburgh Castle is a world famous icon of Scotland and part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. It was recently voted top UK Heritage Attraction in the British Travel Awards and is Scotland’s number one paid-for tourist attraction. This most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century; the Great Hall was erected by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial after the First World War. The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland.

A lot of people at the venue. Can be a bit too much for young children. Was okay but needs to manage flow of crowds better

We made our reservations the day before on the internet so we were able to quickly enter the castle. We took advantage of the free guided tour which was fantastic. It was a great way to learn the basics about the grounds. We loved exploring the castle, sampling whisky in the shop, and taking in the incredible views of Edinburgh.

Edinburgh castle is an impressive sight and is the most visited site in Scotland. I would recommend visiting this site early in the morning as it gets quite crowded later on. There was no guided tour at the time we visited. So we did not have a description of any buildings within the castle. So I would also recommend a guided tour if you are keen on the history of the castle. We bought the Royal Edinburgh ticket and entry was covered with this ticket. I would definitely recommend it.

It was not as we expected as much of the castle has been reformed for safety and tourism purposes. So it lost a bit of the natural And authenticity of a medieval castle. Still a must go if you're a lover of war history and first time in Edinburgh!

Great castle and history. Amazing view from the top.
This impregnable fortress is a must-see-attraction in Edinburgh. It takes about 1-2 hours to view. Book online to avoid long queues. It is better if you come around 1 pm, to catch a surprise, but don’t come on Sundays or public holidays.
