Dream Stay

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 7 Jun 2024
What a fabulous experience!
Luxurious without pretentiousness. Our accommodations were superb, as were the amenities, the dining, the service and of course, the location. Every need was seen to and we could not have asked for more. Our trip had been planned through Links Golf St. Andrews and we could not have dreamt of a better stay.

This hotel is very luxurious! We were so comfortable here and loved looking out our window at the Old Course everyday. Breakfast was excellent. The concierge was really helpful, we appreciate Tom helping us get last minute dinner reservations. Highly recommend

Staying at the Old Course Hotel for 9 nights was a dream. Waking up to sunrises over the 17th hole was amazing. We enjoyed watching golfers go by clear up til it was getting dark at 8:30. The room was spacious, beds and pillows fantastic, Kohler triple shower--amazing. We appreciated the large low table to put our suitcases on--nice practical touch. It was so quiet and comfortable. A little weird to not be able to use the hair dryer in the bathroom but had to plug it in over the desk next to the coffee service? Staff were very attentive, friendly and professional. Loved the "welcoming committee" in his tartan kilt. And the weekly gorgeous huge floral arrangement at the lobby was a touch of luxury. The spa was fantastic--certainly Kohler touches everywhere. We took advantage of the massage and manicure services. Loved the Scottish breakfast spread provided in the sunny room--we always had a window seat. The Old Course hotel stay certainly gave us the rest we needed to play 6 rounds of golf!

Room tip: Be sure to request evening turn down service with complimentary bottled water.

It’s a world renowned hotel for a reason. As soon as you walk through the door you can feel the history in every corner of the building. An excellent hotel with brilliant staff. The golf’s not bad either!

We were delighted to find that not only were there a number of bars and restaurants, there’s even a local gin and whisky experience on site! Highly recommended.

Room tip: Get a table at the road hole bar and watch the golfers walk past beneath you!

Weekend stay: staff pleasant/friendly. Room refurbished and spacious but no bath which for the market position / price is odd. Nice quality touches in room (bathroom products, coffee pods etc). Spa facility is special . Now the less positive - ate 3 meals (skipped breakfasts ). Buffet Friday night - free for all with no table flow management so food kept running out. Tables went uncleared. Acoustics in room dreadful - hard to hold a conversation, Saturday - buffet lunch: greasy fish goujons/ chips or rock hard chicken lumps and limp noodles. Half the tables had 2 carafes of water - the rest none as they’d run out of carafes…. No salt & pepper on table. Saturday dinner - not sure where waiting crew came from but clearly no experience (bread rolls delivered on the right?), starter fishcakes - cold but with flavour, main course lamb was so rubbery it bounced. No salt and pepper on table (requested but never arrived) and no mint sauce. Veggie option ‘cauliflower steak’ was in fact 4 florets. The creme brulee was good though! In the room there were 2 tea bags so I ‘liberated’ four from the buffet lunch to have later in the room / in lieu of breakfast and left them by kettle ….they were removed - just odd.
4th floor bar - young lady said she hadn’t been trained to pour JD & Coke but only G&Ts…after a little advice, we were served Jim Bean & Coke. So understaffed that it took 30 minutes to get a glass of wine = all lost revenue for them! (Bar wasn’t busy). Spa is beautiful but wildly overpriced (twice even London rates)…. Which at least means it’s quiet!
Hotel is uniquely positioned- full of American golfers who bizarrely must think the food is ok! Oh - and the valet parking left one of our parties car visibly open over night!

Room tip: Park your own car but do take swimming costume to take advantage of the spa facilities (without a treatment).

Dear pickle1968,

Thank you for taking the time to review your most recent stay at the resort & for your allowing our Assistant Food & Beverage Manager to speak with you directly yester by telephone.
I trust it was a beneficial conversation for both, it certainly enabled us to identify areas of growth needed to maintain the 5* levels of service one expects when visiting the Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa.

We did not think this place was all that it was made out to be. The decor was old fashioned. The location of the hotel and view of the golf course were the positive features. Our room was comfortable however there is only a bathtub/shower and the tub was so deep that both of us needed the other to get out of the tub. The amenities in the room were nice as well. We did not think the food was very good, below the standards of what this type of hotel should have. Maybe it is because it is so large and they have many groups coming that it is that way.
