After a long journey with 2 small children we arrived at a beautifully lit and welcoming No. 19. Having walked through to door my husband said "you will love it" and I knew we were in for a treat as we have stayed at many self catering properties throughout Scotland and beyond. It is obvious from the minute you step into No. 19 that John and Catrina strive for nothing less than a 5 star plus experience for their guests.

Beautifully appointed with every appliance (all in perfect working order) and facility you could wish for.

Having arrived in the dark, we all snuggled down by the fire and revelled in the warmth and cosiness of the house and feasted on the fantastic hamper of local produce waiting for us, including some lovely local ales and a delicious bottle of wine. Little did we know the best was yet to come in the morning.

The views are out of this world - absolutely jaw dropping and on top of that - the kids spotted the private playground and games room which entertained them (and my husband) no end throughout the holiday. How often do you get to practice on a full size snooker table!!!

We cannot recommend No.19 highly enough. Our host John was professional, extremely attentive and welcoming (make sure and ask him about the tales of the celebrities who have visited the bay viewed from the window) and we hope to meet Catrina on our next visit which we also hope will not be too far away.

One extra tip - we took our own DVDs but have never seen a DVD collection like the one at No.19 - something for every age and covering every genre so save the space in your suitcase!

“Nicely decorated house but let down by key appliances not working”

We stayed at Number 19 for our Christmas week and had hoped and planned for everything to be perfect for this special holiday - unfortunately due to circumstances outside our control, this was not to be.
The interior design is nice enough for a five star location and the kitchen is exceptionally well equipped with three ovens, sharp knives, baking tins etc. Probably the best equipped kitchen we have ever had in a rental cottage. Our problem was though that the dish washer was not working and despite us calling the owners to tell them this on our first full day there for whatever reason no one turned up to fix it during our stay, even though the owners told us the previous occupants had had a problem. This was a particular shame as it was Christmas week so we were creating more washing up than usual and so had to devote precious holiday time to doing it.
The personalised welcome note is a nice idea, however it hadn't been updated for the time of year. In winter much of Skye shuts down but the owners' note suggested we should go to Dunvegan Castle or the Three Chimneys restaurant - both of which are shut when we were there. Luckily we had thought to check before leaving our home - be aware that checking anything like this is very difficult from the house as predictably phone reception is patchy and the wi-fi only works in the games room, which is separate and away from the main house, so it's a bit of a palaver to use it.
The games room sounds very impressive and proved a mild diversion, unfortunately it was too cold to spend much time (even though the winter weather was exceptionally mild). Also while the full size snooker table sounds good it takes up so much room there isn't any space for any seating or to use the table tennis table properly.
We went to Skye mostly for the walking. Waternish is quite a bleak area, not unattractive, but with a very different feel to the rest of Skye. When we go to Skye again we will stay nearer Uig or Dunvegan (both half an hour to an hour's drive away) where the countryside and walking are truly beautiful and magical and more what you think of when you think of Skye. Although the walk to the (lovely) pub in Stein is nice enough, it's not spectacular in the way that so much other countryside there is.
On Christmas Eve morning the boiler went out leaving us with no heating or hot water and we had to phone the owner for instructions to fix it ourselves. There was also a power cut caused by a gale on our final night and morning - meaning we set off for our long drive back home with no showers, or cups of tea and even had to pack the car in the dark as it doesn't get light on Skye till 9am in winter and check out time was 10am. While we understand the dishwasher, boiler and power cut were not the owner's fault, if you spend top dollar on a five star rental you do expect basic things like this to work or at least be fixed promptly. While food hampers, welcome letters etc are a nice touch it's the essentials that can make or break a holiday. Be warned: the owners live a long way away and there seems to be no local support for the cottage so if like us you are unlucky for things to go wrong at Number 19, you are very much on your own!

Management Response

While I strongly disagree with your version of events and complaints posted in this review I do accept and thank you for pointing out the mistakes in the welcome letter. I am sorry that our service, facilities and location was not to your liking, but I am immensely proud and take heart in the fact that many of our bookings this year are from returning guests who did enjoy their stay at Number 19.
