Disappointing- would rate it 3 stars

If you are on a small budget and do not expect high standards then this hotel is for you. It is about a 20 minute tram ride from the centre, obviously in a not so nice area as it is surrounded by a metal fence and gate you need a code for! The first room we were given stank of stale smoke so we’re given another family room, luckily overlooking the huge lake opposite. The breakfast at €18 was not worth it, small selection, no Earl grey tea. The room does not have proper cups and spoons, instead paper cups and sticks! The cups may biodegradable but surely proper cups/mugs are more cost/environmentally friendly!! Plus, I would like my hot drink in a proper cup, not one I can burn my hand on when holding or when it leaks! Lovely chair and desk but then the socket is nowhere near the mirror so difficult to dry hair! Not sure why hotels can’t design hotel rooms more efficiently.
The pool is very small and non descriptive so didn’t use it. The gym was tiny, one treadmill, so my husband decided to run around the lovely lake but was met by many homeless people under the bridge and did not feel comfortable so turned back. The staff were friendly and helpful and a very nice lady on the bar made a fabulous hot chocolate! So it’s not all negative. Family rooms consist of a large bed and sofa beds (double with a gap or single). Also if you’re English, no English channels on the TV, not that you go on holiday to watch TV but one would be nice to have on in the room! Plus, wasn’t impressed with the early fire alarm testing on Monday with no prior warning! All other guests on same floor were not aware either so there was a slight panic/confusion!

We have very mixed feelings after our visit to Novotel Bordeaux Lac.
We arrived in the hotel but our rooms were not ready. Kind of them to give us 2 free drinks between 7 guests whilst we waited.

When we got in to our rooms, we were delighted with the balloons, cakes and birthday banner that the staff had put in the room for our son’s 10th birthday! Thank you!

The room was clean and cosy.

We went for a swim in the pool which was refreshing on a hot day. The children enjoyed the table tennis too.

We enjoyed a late lunch - cheese and meat boards with frites. Yummy. The drinks were lovely too.

We booked a table in the restaurant which was a bit of a mistake. It had the potential to be great but wasn’t.
The children all had the kid’s menu - chips or veg. One child got the wrong meal but we bought another as it may have been a language misunderstanding.
There weren’t many vegetarian options on the menu and as my meal didn’t ever arrive, I can’t tell you if it was good.

Some of the food was very late arriving. One adult had finished his meal before his chips arrived for example.

The hotel was very busy because of the football so perhaps that was why.

The staff were lovely. Very friendly and smiley.

The room was comfortable and the breakfast (e18 per person) was great. There was no rush which we enjoyed.

A quick check-out and filled our bottles with sparkling & still water which is available freely, which was a nice touch

Stayed here for a night when we went as a family to watch the Rugby World Cup 2023. The hotel is literally opposite the Stade Matmut Atlantique in Bordeaux. Very clean hotel and offers a good breakfast and there is also a pool on site. Enjoyed out stay and would definitely recommend.

Great stay at Novotel...
Lovely breakfast with a lot of variety, friendly and very accomodating staff (I want to mention Thomy for the prompt and courteous responses to our emails) and nice and clean rooms. The hotel is 3/4 minutes walk from the tram station which gets you in the city centre in around 25/30 minutes.
Hope this review helps 😊

Paid for a 4* hotel but had a room of a 3*! I was given a room in a floor where some building works were going on. Floor of the corridor leading to the room was covered in plastic and tape! Room was quite small and dark, no water in the room provided or anything in the mini fridge. Beds were badly made. With bed sheets hanging out of mattresses.
Receptionist looked like was making you a favour instead of being proud of his job.
Breakfast was OK but for a 4* I would expect better selection. No toaster available!
Running out of coffee all the time due to only have 2 machines.
Definitely not a 4* hotel for the room provided and service! Quite expensive for the service you have!
Needs load of improvement if wants to be rated as such! I travel quite often so I can compare with other hotels I have been with same rating!

We have stayed at Novotel Bordeaux Lac many times, and in recent years as others have posted (as have I), it was beginning to look a bit tired. We last stayed there in August 2023 and the room in which we were staying had obviously been recently renovated, it was clean and comfortable.

This time we were possibly the first guests to stay in our freshly renovated room located on the fourth floor. The coffee machine appeared to have never been used, and the room had the smell of new paint and carpet. Decorators were still working on rooms on the fourth and third floor.

As always, the hotel staff are very friendly and helpful, and for the first time we dined in the restaurant. It was actually pretty good for a hotel chain. Whilst there were plenty of waiting staff, I assume that there is not a massive brigade in the kitchen, for the food took a little time to arrive. That said, it was freshly cooked, and that takes time.

The negatives - as others continually post, the room was very hot even with the aircon turned up to number 11 (in not brilliant weather in early March). At the end of the day, the hotel is quite old, so I suppose that there is only so much that can reasonably be done. We had a window open through the night, so that made it bearable.

Also, we had a sofa bed for our teenage son. The bottom sheet and protector were very flimsy and were possibly ‘disposable’, and they slid off the bed during the night, so ideally another solution needs to be found for bedding. The bedding on the double bed was super.

My wife ordered room service breakfast, and unfortunately there seemed to be a shortage of pain complet, for not only did she not receive it with her breakfast, but in the dining room itself there was only a little left when I had breakfast the first day - and none the second. Perhaps the hotel needs to be aware of changing eating habits in this respect, for it would appear to be a popular choice. Otherwise, the breakfast was adequate if unremarkable.

We love Bordeaux, and when back in the summer, we will return to Novotel Bordeaux Lac.
