I’m not sure now what I was expecting but, aside from the sheer number of stones, we found the site a bit lacking. The only public notices around the stones were from a protest group railing against the government’s treatment of the site.
That said, there is an incredible number of standing stones and the site is extremely clean and well maintained with good parking at several points.

Carnac is one of the great sites of prehistory in the world. Stretching about 4 kilometer in length about 3000 menhirs stand in parallel rows, ranking in descending height. All were erected between 5000 and 3000 BC in an era when man started to become sedentary.

You can park your car next to the visitor center (“Maison des Mégalithes”). Here you can watch an excellent introductory film and get a first view of the alignments from the roof terrace.

Next up I highly recommend taking a guided tour (lasting about 1h15). First off, it is the only way to walk among the menhirs (otherwise only to be seen from the roadside, for reasons of preservation). More importantly, only a guide can help you truly understand what you are looking at.

Beware : Carnac is a very popular tourist destination. It is therefore highly advisable to book your guided tour in advance. Given the limit number of participants you are otherwise highly likely to be disappointed.

Hélène proved an outstanding guide : kind, knowledgeable and open to questions. She explained the various forms of prehistoric stones, how and when they were erected and offered various hypotheses about their purpose, the most recent being that they served as a warning for people either that they were near the end of the world (the Atlantic ocean) or that these lands were already occupied.

Walking on a beautifully landscaped path along the prehistoric stones, so many stones, as far as you can see! There is a long walking route along all prehistoric elements. Do it!

Let's face it, most people nowadays only stop here because they want to take a selfie with some stones behind their back. I liked it for 15 minutes or so.
