“Perfect Location in Dinan”
Reviewed 21 June 2015 for a stay in May 2015

We stayed for a week in this apartment in the Port of Dinan. The location was very convenient for restaurants, shopping and visiting the surrounding countryside. The windows look out on the river and the old town is not far. The flat is very bright.
The entrance to the flat was grim - a long, dark, dank corridor with a locked door at each end. The flat is on the third floor and is reached by a cement spiral staircase. Watch your step on the stairs; it can be very slippery.
The apartment itself was good. Our only complaint was that the hot water temperature was pretty much boiling. It was a job to avoid third degree burns. There also is no WIFI, which was very inconvenient. There is a charge for linens, which is fine, but we expected that we would get more than one bath towel and one hand towel each for a week.

Management Response

Thanks for making us aware of the situation with the tap ; it's being dealt with. The apartment is not advertised as having Wi-Fi although coincidentally I think we might be about to have it installed in the next couple of weeks. The stairs are steep and slippery when wet and this has been well documented in pretty much every single review prior to this...! Glad to hear you enjoyed Dinan though and rated the apartment as good - I hope you return once we have Wi Fi.

A wonderful location at the side of the river - Dinan is a wonderful town and the apartment was a warm, cosy base. The apartment is really well equipped and well looked after. We enjoyed the walk up the hill into town - perfect for walking off all the lovely meals that we had! We were perfectly situated for exploring but we loved Dinan so much that we just went to the coast at St Cast - on a beautiful sunny day - for fresh seafood and a walk on the beach :) on the way back to St Malo we visited Dinard and the intra muros -definitely both worth another visit. We look forward to staying in the apartment again and would thoroughly recommend it :)

“Excellent and tranquil location”
Reviewed 18 January 2015 for a stay in January 2015

This is an excellent apartment and if you pay attention to previous reviews you will know what to expect and there will be no surprises. There are a number of steps to access the apartment (mainly via an external concrete spiral staircase) and two doors to lock / unlock in addition to the door to the apartment. Headroom is restricted in the bedrooms and bathroom on the top floor. However, this all adds to the unique nature of the apartment and gives you something a bit different from the norm. I am tall (over 6ft) and managed okay for a 2 week stay without any serious bumps to the head!

The view from all windows in the apartment is excellent and well worth the effort of going up and down steps every day. Each window overlooks the river and as the apartment is on the 2nd/3rd floors it is very tranquil. We were there in December/January so car parking outside was not a problem although it did get busy between 12pm and 2pm approx each day. The walk to the town of Dinan is up a very steep hill but it keeps you fit and is worth the walk.

I would recommend this apartment to anyone who wants to get away from it all but also likes being close to local amenities. A car is useful to travel out to other destinations and to drive up to the town if the weather is wet as the steep hill has cobble stones so can get very slippery.

Overall, we had a fantastic time in Dinan and this apartment is great value for money so we will definitely be returning.

“Overall, very good, lovely location”
Reviewed 28 August 2014 for a stay in August 2014

I would firstly like to say that this property was very clean and freshly decorated throughout and overall was very nice. We had a lovely time in Dinan, enjoying the local hospitality on offer.
I can thoroughly recommend L'Atelier Gourmand, L'Ami Louis and Cafe Terrasses, all within 2 minutes of the apartment, clustered near the small bridge.
Dont let the following [points put you off this apartment as it is very nice throughout, but bear them in mind before booking.
We did disagree with the following from the details: -
“A two minute stroll from the heart of the old town”
I would call the centre of the old town to be at the top of the hill, which even as a physically fit party, was definitely not a two minute stroll. At a strolling pace, it took us 10-15 minutes, with an average gradient of 1in10 (800 meters from bottom to top with a rise of 85m). I would consider this “stroll” as misleading and would not be suitable for less agile visitors.

“There is also a shared courtyard at the rear of the property suitable for BBQs”
The courtyard was too small and shady to be used for BBQs as advertised. We never actually saw the sun reach the floor of the courtyard. Some of the chairs were broken, and all of the patio set looked damp and rotten.

“Great for children of all ages”
No mention of access to the property being via many steps on a spiral staircase. Similarly, there is no mention of the narrow, internal spiral staircase. We feel these should be mentioned, as these may render the property unsuitable for people with young children and anyone with mobility issues. Yes, it does state that the property is on the “upper 2 floors”, but at a casual glance, prospective holiday makers might assume this to be the 1st and 2nd floors, rather than 2nd and 3rd.
For these reasons, not only would I not think the flat is 'great for children of all ages' as advertised, but I believe it should be mentioned in the advert that the flat may not be suitable for those with mobility problems.

“Lounge seats for 4”
Factually correct, but we found the 2nd settee (futon) quite uncomfortable to sit on and again, would not be suitable for less able holiday makers, due to it being so low.

Perhaps mention should also be made of the limited headroom in the upstairs areas, as none of us survived the week without banging our heads on ceilings or roof beams and the shower was too low to be used as a normal shower by anyone over approximately 5 feet tall.
Similar to another review I have read, we found it a nuisance having to go through a corridor with locked doors at either end, to gain access to the courtyard and the spiral staircase to the flat.

“Wonderful setting”
Reviewed 13 August 2014 for a stay in August 2014

we had a fantastic time in Dinan and the apartment is in a great spot, but the spiral staircase to the 3rd floor might put some off if you've brought too much luggage!! we didn't mind, but the need to lock 3 doors behind us(for security reasons) did hamper our coming and going separately.
The restaurants within easy walking distance were fantastic and the steep walk up into Dinan on the cobbled street was made a pleasure by all the wonderful art galleries dotted along it and the glorious town of Dinan at the top of the hill. My husband and daughter enjoyed cycle rides on the flat along the river bank. As we only had a few days, we were very grateful to be able to rent for less than a week in the high season, we would have hated to miss out on it. It was good to be welcomed by Wendy and we immediately felt we had some idea of what we were going to do do in our short time having spoken to her and reading the literature in the house.
