Maison Zen is located in a wonderful area, situated within walking distance of The Bastille and the Gare du Leon. Very convenient to the Seine, the open air market, and sundry markets. There's a lovely patisserie right down the block, where my friend and I splurged on cafe creme ($6 per cup) because the coffee maker in our room was defective. This is where my review becomes negative. While the dogs Babette and Anouk were beautiful and wonderful, and the space itself was very aesthetically appealing, the lack of basic courtesy and amenities was not. We had to move from room #2, which we liked very much, because the heat and hot water became unavailable the day after we arrived. The new room, while spacious, had mold in the bathroom and lacked a workable coffee maker. Only one burner worked on the stovetop. There was no reading lamp and by day #5 we had to ask the maid Teresa (very nice woman) to offer us clean towels, toilet paper, and to tidy up the room. The owner of Maison Zen, Madame Perl was extremely unaccommodating and seemed hostile that we were disrupting her life and apparently, a silent retreat, during our stay. She could barely deign to answer questions I had about finding a local boulangerie, and was visibly annoyed that I asked for two receipts upon payment....one for myself and one for my friend. In fact, I'm the one who had to inquire about payment! When my friend checked out she slipped her payment under Madame Perl's door! If you're going to enter into the hospitality industry it's necessary to afford basic customer service.....a TV that works (if there is one in the room), appliances that work...lamps, coffee makers, burners, etc., maid service at some point within a week, and a pleasant staff member available to answer questions and concerns. My friend and I had some foreshadowing of this sort of negligence before we arrived, but we chose to maintain our reservation given the stellar reviews here. Our international draft checks were sent to Madame Perl, only to be returned because she would not receive payment through that means. It wasn't till after this debacle that she clarified on her website how to make a deposit. Our emails went unanswered by her until money was involved and our checks had to be cancelled. Again, a bad sign we should have seriously heeded. Other than the mishaps at Maison Zen, Paris was Paris...beautiful and vibrant :-)

That was my first trip to Paris and a friend recommended this place.
Location was excellent. Very close to the outdoor market which had incredible food! In fact we only ate out 3 times since we bought everything we needed there for the most part.

The kitchenette is small but adequate and has everything we needed for our 1 week stay. The rooms are well kept and there is no noise. The staff was super helpful and we chatted nicely.

Great location. Very close to the airport bus.

We loved Maison Zen! It was spotlessly clean and so welcoming. From the moment we entered the lovely zen courtyard we felt welcome and relaxed, it really is like a little oasis of calm in the centre of the city.

The room was exactly as we expected from the website. Fresh and modern, with everything that we required. I particularly enjoyed the bookshelf full of books, lot's of Paris guide books as well as novels. The kitchen was tiny, the hob only had two hotplates, but we had everything we needed to have some great meals with fish from the Bastille market. The market is on Sunday and Thursday morning and is a great place to shop, lots of good deals on everything, especially fruit, bread and fish. The speedy WiFi was also useful.

We thought the area was great. It is really close to the metro line and is just a few stops from Gare du Nord if you are coming by train. It had lots of patisserie, supermarkets, pharmacies and restaurants and had far less tourists than slightly more central areas. Maison Zen is about a 5 min walk to the Seine, which is a lovely way to explore the city.

We also enjoyed the Le Viaduc des Arts and La Promenade Plantée which is also a 5 min walk from Maison Zen. The Promenade Plantee is a good spot for a quiet picnic lunch!

The only problem was the lack of air conditioning. We went in August and the temperature reached 35 degrees C so the room did get very hot. There was a fan which made it bearable, but really if you are going in July or August air conditioning would be better.

We will definitely return, but probably in the winter.

We chose Maison Zen because of its central location, price, kitchenette and because the website showed spacious, comfortable-looking rooms. It met and exceeded all our expectations.
Most importantly, the place has a wonderfully calm relaxed atmosphere. The staff are Zen Buddhism practitioners or students and were always kind and helpful. The whole place is beautifully decorated, warm, quiet and immaculately clean. If you ask to join in meditation sessions, you will be welcomed.
At the end of long tiring sight-seeing days, it was a pleasure to return to this home from home. Being able to cook in our studio saved a fortune, as the £ is so weak against the € just now. There is even a pretty courtyard where one can sit in fine weather.
If you want to play loud music and party in your room, this is not your sort of place. If you want somewhere quiet, comfortable and relaxing at a very reasonable price, then this is perfect.

I recently spent 3 days at the Maison Zen studio apartments, located at the Zen Centre in the Bastille arrondment of Paris.

They are an oasis of calm, in a busy and very central part of Paris. The studio apartments provide a kitchenette with a small fridge, TV with cable provided free, a small but adequate bathroom that also includes a bath. My apartment also had a writing desk, and previous occupants had left behind a great selection of novels and travel guides and maps for Paris and France. My apartment was also decorated with some of the owner's artwork, which is very good.

The location of Maison Zen is an absolute winner. A short stroll to Metro stations and the large Gare de Lyon, a few blocks to the Jardin des Plantes Batoboat stop on the River Seine, and you can even easily stroll to the Marais area, the Louvre and the Notre Dame Cathedral from here. The start of the wonderful Promenade Plantes is a 5 minute walk from the apartments too; a great place to walk/jog amongst a quiet garden setting when the queuing for the Louvre, Eiffel Tower etc., has taken its toll.

The bustling Bastille area provides infinte choice of excellent cafes, restaurants, nightclubs and close to the new Opera building - the NY City Ballet was available whilst I was there.

Grazyna's Perl, the owner, only request when staying there was for me, and other guests, to remove their shoes. And not make too much noise.

Grazyna, the Zen Centre staff and other guests staying there, were all extremely friendly and helpful. And laidback ... the benefits of Zen meditation no doubt.

This is a great location for a Paris visit, and offers the opportunity to cook a few meals of your own, rather than having to always eat out, that staying in hotels require. Great value for money.
