We've been coming to Chez Denise for 30+ years. Although my wife speaks fluent French, friendliness is not on the menu at Chez Denise. Want them to call a taxi, the answer is "Non." Want to see the very interesting wine cellar which has access from a trap door behind the bar, and the answer is "Non." Waiters range from aloof to friendly. As for the food, pates are excellent. I'd also recommend the salmon and lamb chops, and, of course, you have to order the frites. Typically, there is just a choice in red wines between a Brouilly and a modest Bordeaux. Pair the salmon with Brouilly and the chops or steak with the Bordeaux. The patrons are from all over and since seating is tight, making friends is a must.

Of all the restaurants in France that we have experienced, this one was the absolute worst! I understand that it is not common to ask for take out in France but when we asked if we could share their flank steak between four of the women in our party, we were told no, so each of us ordered a flank steak. My thought at the time was that most French restaurants serve small portions anyway, so what the heck! Much to our surprise, the steaks came out to us the size of a huge dinner plate. Needless to say, not one of us could eat even half of our steak, so it was ridiculous for us not to ask for a take away bag. When we asked, our waiter made a scene and threw his hands up acting exasperated to have to do this for us. He took our plates and returned the steaks to our table wrapped in foil. One of our steaks started leaking all over the table and had started dripping onto our friend's pants, so she asked nicely if she could please get a bag. Once again the waiter huffed, throwing up his hands again and speaking in French LOUDLY at this point. When we asked to speak to the owner, the waiter assured us that he was the reason that the waiters act as they do there. The owner was even more rude to our friend (the one with all the steak juice on her pants) She advised him how rudely we were treated and informed him that she is a food critic in NY City and his reply was that he would just have to look her up to see about that! She is in fact a famous food critic and has already told her many followers not eat at Chez Denise.

Don't even think about going there unless you want a big serving of attitude. We weren't too hungry and wanted to share the steak with frites. They said no - then had even more attitude when we asked to take all the leftovers (and there were lots) with us. The did foil wrap the leftovers and handed them to us dripping in blood!
Skipped Chez Denise unless you want to experience impertinence.

We wanted to eat something small after a show in Paris, and when we came to the restaurant at 1AM, we where 3 people and one of us is Vegan so he didn't want to eat (he had nothing to eat there). When we asked for one full dish and a salad dish, the water told us we can't seat there if we don't order 3 dishes. After trying very hard to understand what he meant, he just left us and stopped talking to us. We left the place without having any food and with a very bad taste.

We expected more of an upmarket restaurant but got a rustic charming place which I am sure has been around forever. One waiter was so rude we had to start laughing.
When asking politely for a coffee and a whiskey in very bad french, he just snarled at us stating very angrily that he "no parle anglais". He was so rude all the time that he actually made our evening alot funnier and now we finally met one of those rude waiters we actually have not encountered previously. Every other waiter was very nice and service minded. The cote de boeuf was enormous but very very chewy. My girlfriends steak tartare was really good. The bread and butter was nice, so was the wine, we opted for the more expensive red one.
