We wanted to book someplace special in Paris for our 50th anniversary. We hit the nail on the head! When we arrived at the Simpatico houseboat, we were in awe of the surroundings. We could see the Eiffel Tower. We were sitting on the Seine River at the foot of the Bir-Hakeim bridge which is beautiful at night. We walked to most of the places you like to see in Paris. Toward the end of our stay we realized we were 3 minutes from a subway stop that connects to anywhere you want to go, but we enjoyed exploring the streets of Paris. The inside of the houseboat is a marvel of beautifully finished woods. It is roomy and contains a fully-equipped kitchen. We loved to fall asleep with the gentle motion of the boat rocking. Mr. Bob, the owner, patiently took time to explain all the features of the houseboat when we arrived. We hope we can return to this wonderful relaxing and perfectly located boat in the future.
My fiance and I spent a week staying at the Simpatico. The boat is in an amazing location. Close to the Eiffel tower and all of the activities along the river, and also close to two transit lines. There are numerous shops and restaurants nearby, including a couple of grocery stores. The boat is not luxurious, but it is very comfortable, spacious and very unique. There is heat, but no air conditioning so we did need to open the windows in the evening to let in some cool air (we had some hot weather during our visit) and we found the Wi-Fi to be spotty, but these issues did not detract from our stay. Sitting on deck in the evening watching the world go by was a one of a kind experience.
We enjoyed our stay overall. It’s filled with charm and very well equipped. But we found a number of safety issues. It was difficult to get on and off the boat, especially with luggage. A gangplank next to the hatch would be great, instead of the one way up front, reached via a very narrow walkway. The heavy steel hatch itself was very difficult for me to raise and we nearly clobbered our heads lowering it a time or two. Also, a step on the deck below the gangplank would be helpful. My hip was sore from the knee-high step up and down after a couple of days. Likewise, the interior stairs could use a handrail, especially when the boat was rocking. Finally, the hot water was scalding hot both in the galley and bathroom. Cosmetically, some live plants and nicer deck chairs would add a lot. I would not recommend the boat for seniors or anyone with hip, knee or balance issues.
I was planning to surprise my wife with a long dreamed of trip to Paris to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. I came across Bateau Simpatico on TripAdvisor and immediately contacted Bob. We sold our boat 3 years ago and still miss it. The thought of spending our anniversary on a boat in Paris couldn't have been more appealing. The pictures don't do it justice. Simpatico is a wood worker's piece of art. Rocking to sleep at night was wonderful and relaxing on deck watching the boats pass by is better than sitting in any 5 star hotel room.
Bob met us on arrival to explain everything aboard and to answer any questions we had. As others have said, the location is perfect. Transportation is steps away and there are more restaurants than you can count within easy walking distance. If you feel like cooking there are grocery stores within 2 blocks and a full galley aboard. Everyone we met was amazed that we were staying on one of "those boats on the river" and all were jealous when they saw the pictures. We seriously did not want to leave!
Our anniversary trip was everything we hoped for and more but what we will remember most of all was our stay aboard Simpatico. Thanks again, Captain Bob, it was wonderful!
Third time on the barge, we love it, so central to everything, Bob is wonderful, he's there when you need him, friendly location good neighbours, loved the nights on deck watching the world go by. Great little galley with all appliances, location amazing for Eiffel Tower 5 minute walk, close to grocery stores, restaurants, railway stations, water taxis, dinner cruises, great market sunday and Wednesdays just down the street, if you want something different from a hotel, this is the place. Love being rocked to sleep at night and in the morning Seine is so quiet and calm, we just love this place, what can we say!!
