“Lovely cottage in a fascinating area”

Sue and Paul were great next door hosts for whom nothing was too much trouble. The cottage had everything and the welcome wine and other essentials added to the feeling that we were glad to be there and they were pleased to see us - especially as we mangaged to get lost a few times in the first couple of hours. Nothing that a phone call couldn't fix!
The cottage was comfortable and had everything we needed including lovely spaces around the garden to enjoy the warmth and sunshine. My wife said the pool was great after a hard day of sight seeing!
Allaigne itself was an interesting village with a friendly baker and a bar/restaurant worth visiting. The village was surrounded by good walks and great views.
The surrounding area had small towns with large markets and easy parking. The Cite at Carcassonne was amazing while medieval Mirepoix and nearby Limoux were both well worth visiting.
Next time we hope to stay longer both for the hospitality and the variety of places we have yet to see.

“Lovely place, lovely people”
Reviewed 24 October 2011 for a stay in October 2011

This is a comfortable and well-equipped gite ideally suited for a couple looking for a relaxing break in beautiful countryside and/or a base for exploring the many impressive historical and natural sights in this part of the country. The English owners, who live in an adjoining cottage, could not have been more welcoming and helpful and we were free to make use of the sunny south-facing garden as well as bikes, exercise machine, table tennis etc. There's not a lot in the village itself apart from a (part-time) boulangerie and a (Welsh-run) bar/brasserie but it's very quiet and charming and there are several larger villages and towns within a short drive. One money-saving tip: if you're planning to visit Carcassonne plus at least one other castle/abbey it's worth getting a Cathar country "passport" which costs 2 euros and gives a 1-2 euro reduction at about 20 different places. You can buy them at the ticket offices but they are not well advertised!
