“Well situated”
Reviewed 22 November 2011

We stayed 6 nights at this well situated hotel, halfway between the train station and the Promenade des Anglais. It was clean, had an elevator and 24 hour reception and on the one occasion we chose to have breakfast, it was good. At 60 Euro per night it was a bargain. There is a full supermarket a few doors down. It is walking distance to "Old Nice".

Stayed here for a last minute weekend break to Nice with wife and kids. Clean, nice little hotel with elevator and rooms with balconies.

Within easy walking distance of the Promenade Des Anglais and the beach and to Gare de Nice Ville, Hotel Little Palace offers clean comfortable rooms at reasonable rates. Given its location, it offers good value as a base for touring Nice and the surrounding area.
If you're driving street parking can be a challenge - on one occasion we ended up about half a kilometre from the hotel, but the walk back was pleasant. Staff are efficient albeit the day time receptionist was pedantic to the point of patronizing, "Yes we know how security card room entry works...." She entertained us with her rigid formality, giving us plenty to chuckle about as she went about explaining in great detail various aspects of the hotel with an almost robotic manner. She is very thorough, if some what detached. Other staff were very courteous and helpful - we were made to feel welcome and were given plenty of assistance in planning our day - directions and hints were offered without asking.
The room we stayed in was large and quiet on the 4th floor. Street noise was acceptable and we slept well.
Breakfast offers good variety in a comfortable setting, and is available from 7:00 - 10:00 making it good for those who want to sleep in a bit, which after a couple of late nights we were grateful for.
As a base it met our needs in all respects - we could walk to most of the locations in Nice we wanted to visit, or catch a train via a 10 minute walk to the station.
Would we stay again? Yes, it met our needs for clean, comfortable and convenient accommodation.
Would we recommend it? Yes, it offers good value for money albeit the day time receptionist could be a bit of a turn off for first impressions if one didn't take a humorous approach to her manner.

Room Tip: Street parking can mean a bit of a walk

My review is pretty much going to mirror what most people have said (negatively) about this hotel. We ended up staying here after finding all the other great places that are recommended were all booked up. The price looked good, so we figured we'd take a gamble.

To start, we had trouble finding the place and those who we asked had no idea where the hotel was, nor the street name. The directions were poor, though I will take responsibility for not googling and printing out a map.

Upon arrival, a very uncharismatic and monotonous woman gave us the run down and was emphatic about point out the piddly 75 cent per night tax that isn't included in the rate. Really? Couldn't you just put it in the rate and save me the explanation? Anyway, moving on... we got the key and off to the room.

The hotel looks like it was renovated, but only partially. The lighting is 80s, the walls are some kind of horrid burgundy from the 60s and the whole place wreaks of some kind of detergent they must douse the place in regularly. It's an attack on the senses, to say the least. Up to the room, the elevator is barely largely enough for two people with one bag each (I'm not subtracting for this, I understand it's Europe, but just an FYI).

The furniture in the room is some distasteful whitewashes 80s leftover with a gaudy brass chandelier (complete with one bulb burnt out) lighting up the place. The linens are clean but unsightly. There is ZERO charm to be found here. Oh and good luck finding an outlet to charge your phone or camera battery. There was ONE and, of course, when you leave the room all electricity is deactivated so you can't leave something charging while out (here's a tip: fold a pamphlet and stick it in the key slot to keep electricity active).

The bathroom has no external vent. Well, there is something that looks like a vent, but if you take a close look, it really just lets the steam and other odors rise into a crawl space (no fan, no exhaust). The shower has a handheld shower-head that can be mounted on a rail.... the only problem was the rail was worn out and the shower-head kept falling down (do you know what a pain it is to hold the shower-head and try to wash with the other hand?).

Our a/c unit had too settings: Off and Freeze. You can imagine how that was for sleeping (i.e. NOT helpful). Also, shutting off the a/c revealed a host of other noises that the a/c fan drowns out! We had a courtyard facing room with no view.

Lastly, the staff were not helpful. I asked about booking a tour and she just pointed me to the wall of pamphlets, no offer to make a call and no suggestions to be had.

As for location, if you are that person who circles a parking lot endlessly until you can park right at the entrance to the mall, this place is not for you. You will have to walk to get to anything (which, personally, I don't mind). It's not really convenient to anything, but if the hotel itself weren't so horrid, this wouldn't matter as the walking can be a pleasant stroll.

Room Tip: Take a room on the lower floors as the elevator doesn't stop when occupied and takes forever dur...

The hotel is handy for the Gare SNCF, and 15 mins walk from the Old Town. Rooms facing the street are noisy, and neither of our rooms had operating aircon. (It made a lot of noise but didn't cool). We had to leave the window open to make the rooms cool enough to sleep.
