We live in London and were visiting the region to visit the vinyards and caveaus of Chateauneuf-du-pape. Travelling by Eurostar / train, we didn't bother hiring a car this time. We wanted to stay somewhere close by that was reasonably priced in the middle of summer close to wine country, and we found it here. We were only staying for 5 nights, and we were only charged for 5 nights, rather than the usual '7 nights minimum' at this time of year. The owner, Chantal, was exceptionally welcoming and helpful. Not only did Chantal agree to meet us at the train station in Orange to provide us with a lift, she also drove us to the supermarket upon arrival, provided fresh eggs on arrival and brought us fresh fruit and potatoes during our 5 day stay. The gite/farmhouse itself is secluded, on the edge of the town (30 minute walk/10 minute cycle ride to Orange). The rooms were comfortable enough, furnished in the traditional rustic French country style. Sheets, pillows and blankets are provided! The kitchen was fully equipped (including kettle!). The garden was a nice open outdoor space, sheltered from 'La Mistral' (that was blowing fairly strongly during our stay!), with a veg plot tended daily by Chantal from which we could help ourselves to as much veg as we wanted (tomatoes, aubergine, courgettes, squash etc). We rented electric bikes from the local sport shop in town, and so the journey out and about was really really easy (e.g. 40 minutes to Chateauneuf-du-pape through the vinyards and 'chateaus' - glorious!). Chantal drove us back to the train station on departure day. Chantal speaks English very well which helped with my increasingly inept French... Could not have asked for a more helpful or friendly host. Thank you Chantal.
If you're looking for something comfortable, simple, tradtional, rural but not isolated, and great value, then book this place.
We enjoyed our stay at Chantal's place. She was a wonderful hostess. The location is close to several good places to visit in the Provence region (only half hour from Pont du Gard). It is a lovely farm house just minutes outside L'Orange. It reminds us of our own farmhouse in rural Ohio, United States. Chantel gave us fresh farm eggs for breakfast and let us pick produce from her garden.
