You have done the right thing - stay with us and just walk up the stairs into your suite after a meal in the Le Gourmet. Thank you for trying out our Hotel rooms this time together with a visit to the Restaurant.
I remain with warmest regards,
We decided to stay here on our first visit to Heidelberg because we had read Mark Twain's A Tramp Abroad, which mentioned this hotel as a student duel site. If you're a history buff, how could you resist? It turned not only to be historically delightful, but all over wonderful. From the beautifully decorated rooms to the most amazing breakfast and the most charming young man at the desk who could not have been more helpful. When in Heidelberg, we'd stay nowhere else!
Thank you for the delightful comment due to your stay in the Hirschgasse - we appreciate it very much.
You see: "history actually teaches us something..." Not always, it has to be a dry matter and can be filled wonderfully, so it still can be a very useful and pleasant experience.
Hoping to see you in our "classroom" again soon :-)
If you're looking for a taste of homespun Heidelberg with lashings of quaint and eccentric luxury, then this is the retreat for you. I stayed here as a single female traveller (attending a conference) and loved the subtle yet welcoming hospitality of the place. Whilst the bedrooms are an overstuffed concoction of 1980's Laura Ashley on steroids (think matching wallpaper, bedding, curtains and cushions), they exude a welcoming homeliness that makes you feel quite cocooned from the rigour of everyday life. I was in a bedroom nestled into the eaves of this traditional home, with splendid views of the river and castle. The welcoming glass of port, bowls of wrapped chocolates and glossy coffee table books were a lovely touch after a long day traveling.
The hotel is only a twenty minute walk by the river from the town centre, so benefits from being quiet and secluded whilst still proximal to some delightful restaurants and bars. In reality though, it is hard to pull yourself away from the acclaimed hotel restaurant at all. This is where you find yourself served exquisite local delicacies by white gloved waiters, one arm formally tucked behind their backs as they reverentially explain each course in hushed accented tones. At points, I wondered if I had stumbled onto an Agatha Christie film set by mistake, tucking into the charcuterie plate whilst mounted antlers trembled on the walls around me.
I would come back here in a flash. I loved the character and welcoming elegance of this hotel. It was exquisite.
We love the style of your narration and thank you for such a good entertaining short story.
It is true, some people have to adapt first, being part on the big table with Hercule Poirot serving dinner in a "crooked house" By the way, we have really an excellent moose - chocolate mousse!
Hope your flash works - looking forward to seeing you soon.
We were welcomed by the owner and offered a glass of prosecco and a little amuse with salmon. He asked us if we were interested in the history of Die Hirschgasse. Yes! So he told us a lot about the indeed very interesting history and about his special interest of the interior decorating of the hotel; his special interest. Which we saw later: all very fine English fabrics and wallpapers- even a special woven tapestry in the elevator!. His wife is from Uk, so no wonder. It's marvellous, although this is the least you would expect in Germany. In a way it doesn't fit, although being so beautiful. If we hadn't visit the restaurant and breakfast room, we would left driving on the left side of the street the next day.
Our room was very nice with a lot of precious details. Beautiful bathroom. The only negative thing was: it was too warm in the room (snow outside in January). Although there were 2 windows we didn't dare to let them open during the night, since our room was situated on the ground floor.
Thank you for the nice report - you are going through a lot of trouble for us.
UK in Germany? Yes, it also a way of describing it. I always use the expression: British Isle in Old Heidelberg.
We are working on the snow slowly - so perhaps next time we will start with ice-cold foot baths .-)
Glad that you stayed with us - until next time
We travelled as a couple during our European road trip, it was lovely to hear a friendly English voice welcoming us when we arrived, the owners are a couple, English wife and German husband . The welcome we received was great, glass of prosecco on arrival and a small bottle of wine in our room, the breakfast was very good with a wide selection bought to our table, the staff are excellent and attentive. Our bed was very comfortable and we had a great couple of days in Heidelberg!!
Dear Cambridge Trees,
Thank you for the excellent rating you have given us and also your visit. We look forward to welcome you again in the Hirschgasse soon and remain with best greetings - Ernest and of course also Allison Kraft...
After a long, nightmarish drive (roadworks most of the way!), we were delighted to be welcomed so warmly to this charming hotel. Our suite on the second floor was spacious and relaxing, very comfortably furnished with a very pretty bathroom which was well appointed with all one could need, and we had the luxury of TWO loos!! The bed was extremely comfy with a really fluffy lightweight duvet.
Our dinner in the restaurant, which is so full of history, was of the highest quality and the service first class. The choice at breakfast was quite amazing.
A minor point, perhaps tea/coffee facilities in the room would be nice.
However, a thoroughly enjoyable stay and we look forward to returning for a longer stay in the Autumn. Very many thanks.
Thank you for staying with us and thank you also for the super rating you gave us. We look forward to your revisit in autum and remain with very best regards,
