When Disney had to imagine a castle he had this in his creative mind: Ludwig's castle, inspired by Richard Strauss world and masterpieces. It is of course touristic, crowded and not cheap but magic is around it. You can visit it (book in advance or make a cue, coming also 1 or 2 hours before you planned the visit) or simple admire it. Parking costs, if you do not want to walk (more ore less 30 minutes walk till the castle in a miracolous nature) you can grab a horse (or better to say a carriage run by horses) or a bus. But I suggest to walk.
Shops are down, during the walk and offer souvenirs, chocolate and sweets, pizza and sandwiches. Once close to the castle you can see also Mary's bridge, Ludwig's favourite, walking 15 minutes. View is simply beautiful (it is free but you need to cue even at the bridge).
Amazing and fairy as Disney's imagination.

Maybe too many pepople. It was a little bit complicated to take the ticket. Our guide in the castle could speak a very poor english but enough to understand.
The visit inside the castle is very nice .

I visited the castle as part of a tour group out of Munich. We hiked the trail to the castle in light snow along with many others. There was a long line for tickets and a long line to ride the horse drawn carriages. A shuttle is also available. The walk was about 20 minutes. As you approach the castle there is a gift shop, a hotel, and a restaurant. If you have at least 25 minutes before (or after) your castle tour, definitely go to the bridge above the castle. It has a commanding view not to be missed. At the castle entrance you insert your ticket bar code forward at your appointed time and you are led through the various rooms and levels of the castle. The first set of stairs were very dark. Everyone is given a handset to listen to a recording of what is on display. I advise bringing ear buds as there is a place to connect them and you don't have to keep holding the handset to your ear. No photos of any kind are allowed, so I bought a 5 euro picture book at the gift shop at the end of the tour. The walk back down is easier.

We toured both castles and they were beautiful, the walks in between amongst the forest were lovely too. Definitely plan ahead, we reserved tickets for entry into the first castle at 12 and this meant we had to catch the 7:55am train from Munich to pick up our tickets by 10:30 (you have to collect reserved tickets at least 1.5 hours before). The queues for non reserved tickets were very long.

Definitely take shuttle buses where you can as the day can get tiring, tours last about 30 minutes long which disappointed us and others. Views from the bridge were amazing! Lots of queueing everywhere for buses, for the bridge etc so try and arrive as early as possible and buy the Bayern ticket which will cover train tickets and buses to and from the station (but not shuttle buses)

Our tour in English was 9:55.

I HIGHLY recommend doing an early morning tour. By the time we came back down, the line at the ticket office was crazy long, and the city was crawling with people.

We arrived at 8:30, parking was easy, and there was no line at the ticket office. You MUST have a reservation, or the queue could be an hour! We also had 4 people in front of us for the bus ride up. If you have difficulties walking any distance, do NOT walk up!!!! Pay the 2.50€ for the bus. It is very steep, and would be at least 20 minutes.
