It must be admitted that Schloss Neuschwanstein - King Ludwig's gift to Bavarian tourism - is an imposing edifice and very photogenic. However, the plethora of tourist -serving infrastructure that it has attracted and the hordes of people that flock here to oooh and aaah, make Hohenschwangau village nothing more than a machine designed to house, feed and transport humanity for maximum profit! The only redeeeming feature of my short visit was that my hotel was away from the Madding Crowd, with adequate parking, overlooking a vast car park. My room in The Garni Schlossblick had a balcony which had a backside (but attractive) view of the said Ludwig Folly. Other than these few positive aspects it was nothing to rave about. Breakfast and general service levels were well-below acceptable standards. My advice to would-be tourists is to save the cost of a trip for a more deserving location and drool over professional pictures of the castle(s) instead!

Room Tip: Get a balconied room with THE edifice in view

I booked two nights here so we could have a relaxed visit to the castles.
We stayed in the annexe at the back of the hotel, a delightful little 'chalet' on two levels. Our rooms has a little patio but a rather unfortunate backdrop of a factory but were clean and although spartanly furnished perfectly adequate for the price of 34 euro each per night including breakfast.
The location is also unbeatable, a 5 minute walk to the castle ticket office and bus stops.
All in all a pretty faultless, economical and perfectly located place to stay.

We quite enjoyed our stay at this hotel. We have two boys, aged 8 and 10, and got two rooms for a very reasonable rate. The rooms were warm and cozy and one of our rooms on the 2nd floor had a balcony with an amazing view of both castles simultaneously. Wonderful to sit out and drink wine and enjoy the view. The rooms were certainly adequate in size, although not large. The rooms were clean and made up promptly in the morning. The hotel is old and noises travel easily, including neighbors walking, showering, and flushing toilets. This would be a problem for light sleepers (it was for one of us). The breakfast was a bit sparse, but the bread and coffee were good. The staff was welcoming and accommodating. I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Second floor balcony is amazing.

I guess the whole town of Hohenschwangau is geared towards tourists and this place was the most reasonable that we came across. It's location is at the bottom of the hill but it has unrestricted views to the castle from the front of the hotel. All around it are the massive car parks that service the numerous visitors each day and so I am guessing they will never lose that vantage point.
Reception is only 'manned' for certain hours during the day and if your arrival is after 8pm then you could encounter some difficulties. However, we were there in plenty of time and the welcome was warm and friendly with all aspects being explained. apparently the front door is locked as reception leave but each room has the key to the side door so guests can come and go. The building has obviously been around for some time and we were given the key to room number 3 which was on the first floor at the front. My wife and I did exchange glances as we approached the door as the floorboards gave an almighty creek but it was no more serious than that. The room was cheerful and although the furniture was old in style it was still very functional. The twin beds were big, firm but comfortable and there was also a seat in the room. The bathroom was rather small and the shower cramped but it all functioned well enough although warm water did take a time to come through but it did get there eventually.
You can pay an absolute fortune in this place and still not end up with anything better and since we were one night only the price and facilities suited our needs.
Breakfast in the morning was included and was a buffet affair of typical continental style.
Free car parking was available at the front and also around the side and back. It did get busy on the night we were there and we were invited to leave the car there the following day as we visited the castle even though we had checked out. Check out was smooth, efficient and easy.

Room Tip: If you want to see the castle then a room at the front is needed.

My friend and I booked this hotel on location primarily and on the basis that it was an excellent price. We were not disappointed with the location - fantastic views of the castles and excellent for walking into the town for lunch/dinner etc during the day. Decent sized car-park too, which was handy. We paid for breakfast which was basic but good - selection of cereals, bread, jams, cheese and ham as well as tea and coffee. The staff are all lovely and very very helpful - could not fault them at all. The hotel itself though was just average - the rooms were a good size and very clean and tidy but basic. Beds were comfy, towels were a good size. The only irritating thing was that it was very hot on the days we were there, so you had to open the window at night. This was fine for me but my friend only had a door to the balcony on her room.... and the balcony was a shared area for 4 different rooms, so she was worried she'd end up having a random visitor in the night! Otherwise, the hotel ok, not spectacular, but good for the price, hence the 3 rating.
