Description: The restaurant is located in the very heart of Germany´s secret capital - the Marienplatz of Munich. There is no way you will get more down-town, since the Ratskeller is located in the cellar of the new town hall - built in the late 19th century... There are few places where you get to see more history while enjoying some of Munich´s best traditional dishes... We certainly do offer vegan and vegetarian meals, too. Approx. 20% of our menu consists of meat-free food. We really hope to see you here soon!

We had a nice dinner here, unfortunately our son had pasta al pomodoro and was overcooked and was no good at all. I personally recommend everything because its delicious but pasta. Maybe was our luck but it was that way. Nice place anyway.

This restaurant is worth going to see the wonderful decor. However, the vegan options were very limited. The one I chose was extremely overpriced and tasteless. Our server was quite rude.

Hi Sami L,

about 20% of our massive menu is either vegetarian oder vegan. Most of our guests consider this to be more than enough, since most comparable restaurants don´t even offer 2 vegan dishes.

There´s a vegetarian restaurant close to us, which I can recommend very much to you. It´s called "Tian" and I am sure they do offer vegan dishes, if you ask them for it.

Good luck on your journey!

The Ratskeller is a super convenient and solid choice if you are looking for a place to have a Bavarian lunch in the center of Munich. The other option would be the Franziskaner, which is much more expensive, but definitely the nicer choice (also less touristy). The Ratskeller is an absolutely massive restaurant so you will likely find a table even during busy times. The service is good and efficient. The Menu is also massive and personally I think they have overdone it. It gives the impression that they are catering to either tourists or pensioners, as a lot of the dishes are marketed with health benefits like an “omega 3 salad”. Having a this large, plastic clad menu is not elegant. However, once you find the traditional German dishes amongst the horrors of pineapple curry then they are solid and deliver. Being from Munich and having been to many family lunches here I can vouch for this. So stick to the Bavarian and you’ll leave satisfied. They also do free WiFi :) overall, this is a good place to stop in for lunch. The Dekor does aim for elegance, but the size and menu mean that it isn’t achieved. You will find a solid meal here for decent prices considering it’s in the very center of the city.

Dear Afra A,

to me it seems, you have done deep and decent research about us. It´s fun to read how you, as a frequent, see us.

Let me go through the points you mentioned:

1, Franziskaner:

Yes, the Franziskaner is a very respected Bavarian restaurant for a good reason. I have to admit, that they definitely offer the best Leberkäse on the planet. Not, because we don´t offer this product on your as you call it "massive, overdone menu", but because there´s nothing comparable out there.

2, Menu:

Due to the fact that approximately 70% of our guests are locals, we cannot focus on Bavarian cuisine only. For example: We feel very lucky to have hired some of the best fish cooks you can imagine. In addition, our kitchen-chef has been able to work with some of the most respected German star cooks before he started working for us in the late 1990s. His experience is what we benefit from nowadays. Even the pineapple curry, which we offer only in March, is made by an authentic cook from India. There´s an additional menu, consisting of seasonal dishes, which changes every month.

3, Price/Performance-Ratio:

As I mentioned before: Most of our guest come from Munich and it´s suburbs. We are very dependent on them. We need them to come back frequently, just like you do fortunately. If we were to be among the most expensive places in town, we would take a lot of attraction out of the city center of Munich. However, since we buy our products mostly only from suppliers, which are known for their high-quality standards, you will never find us among the cheapest restaurants in town also.

Thank you for being our guest and thank you very much for taking the time to give feedback to us!

Best wishes from the Ratskeller of Munich,

Martin Wieser

The decor is beautiful I’ll have to say that - leather chair and sofas, high arched ceilings.
That said the prices were ridiculously high, the food kind oh meh and the crowd rather old.
Might worth the visit to take a look and relax but that’s it.

Hi OnTheEdgeOfEarth,

you should always be considering, where you are when you decide to walk into a restaurant! You came to a place, located at the most expensive piece of real estate in the country.

That´s why....

When we visit Munich, then we always will visit the brauhaus but also Ratskeller! But you need to make a reservation! We were there on a saturday evening and the huge restaurant was packed with people and all tables were reserved. So beware!
We were placed in the weinstube and this is really a nice area of the restaurant. They have 5 huge areas and they all have their own ambiance. I really like the weinstube!
The have a lot of open local wines. Great to taste! All in traditional glasses!
The staff is really friendly and all food comes very quick.
The food is wholesome and very tasty. Especially the potato salad and the sauerkraut is to die for!
