“More than a medieval building”

Councillors' Tavern
Ranked #27 of 54 things to do in Rothenburg
Attraction details
Reviewed 22 December 2017

The building located next to the Town Hall was not just Councillors' Tavern, it was the Information Center and also the Clock Tower in Rothenburg. Apart from enquiring information inside the center, nearly all visitors would stand still outside the building to wait for the clock show which would be demonstrated each hour between 10 am to 10 pm on a daily basis. So don't miss the show when you travel in Rothenburg.

Practically every building with the walled town is fascinating. In the very busy square alongside the town hall. Plenty happening all around and you have to see on the hour as the clock is worth seeing. Not as good as Prague but worth seeing.

No historic German town on the Romantic Road would be complete without a clock tower on the main square and Rothenburg is no exception. It is nicely and simply animated. You'll find that the building is no longer a tavern but houses the visitors center. Enjoy the square and the clock.

The picturesque Councillor's Tavern stands at the top of Rothenburg's Market Square and houses the tourist information center. On the top of the hour between 10 am to 10 pm it puts on a quirky clock show that is cheesy but entertaining to see.

This striking building in the town square near the town hall is no longer a tavern but houses the Tourist Information Centre. It's worth being there when the clock strikes the hour [between 10am & 10pm] and two windows open to show two moving figures, representing how in 1621 the mayor saved the town from destruction by drinking over three litres of local wine. The building also has a sundial and a coat of arms.
All good fun!
