Owner description: The Pergamonmuseum is a three-wing complex. The museum houses three of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin’s collections: the Antikensammlung, Vorderasiatisches Museum, and the Museum für Islamische Kunst. The impressive reconstructions of massive archaeological structures – the Pergamon Altar, Market Gate of Miletus, the Ishtar Gate and Processional Way from Babylon, and the Mshatta Facade – have made the Pergamonmuseum famous throughout the world, with the result that it is the most visited museum at the Staatliche Museen and in Germany as a whole.

Amazing eclectic collection of mainly Middle Eastern artifacts including some huge pieces. Beautiful Islamic ceramics on upper level. No cafe so if you need refreshment plan ahead!

It is such a spectacular piece of architecture... imposing, but utterly beautiful. Definitely worth getting the audio guide, and I think will be even better once the 'Museum Island' project is completed.... Some lovely pieces, incredible that they have survived WWII and the division of Berlin.... (although obviously not going to get into political debate on the removal of pieces during the final days of the battle of Berlin). The market gate from the Roman town is also a thing of wonder, such a pity it cannot be viewed in its original location!

Today my husband and I visited with a Museum Island ticket. This didn’t get us into the museum straight away, however we lined up at 1000 and were inside by 1040. We really liked walking around the exhibitions and out of the other places to visit on the ticket found that this was the highlight. You will have to see this great museum to know what I mean. Don’t forget your audio guide and you will need to lock up your bags and coats. To do this you will need 50 cents or 1 Euro coin to use the locker which is refundable.

The Ishtar gates of Babylon are a Must See in Berlin. You cannot see these rare, beautiful and extraordinary walls/gate anywhere. When a city has as many fabulous things to see and museums to visit as Berlin, my rule of thumb is to see what you cannot see anywhere else. You don’t need Berlin for Impressionist paintings- there are plenty in NY, PARIS, London and elsewhere. But Pergamon is only on view here. Don’t miss it.
