This museum is pretty cool, because of the fact that the actual building you walk around in, is the exhibition itself. We took the guided tour (6 euros) that on our opinion was worth it, and I think that without the tour, the museum isn't really special (looks like a normal prison).

Really detailed guided tour! If you know German, I recommend doing a German tour as they are guided by ex-inmates.

Came here based on a recommendation from Sophie on the red Berlin tour. A fascinating insight into life just after World war 2 up until the fall of the wall. Really brings home the reality of life with the Staasi. Some tours are given by former inmates at the prison, unfortunately ours wasn’t but was still a great tour. You can only access the memorial via the tours, but it wouldn’t be nearly as good without a guide. Comes with stories from former inmates and also reminds how what happened still affects people living today and isn’t just consigned to the history books.

A thought provoking tour, excellent guide and very informative. The prison gave you the cold chills and a clear understanding as to the conditions of the prison and circumstances of the time.

We had a tour around what is known as the Stassi prison. The tour guide had been imprisoned here for nearly 7 months before "Confessing" to his crime and being transferred to a proper prison for 5 years, this facility was just used as an interrogation centre which in the case of Jo was the 7 months before he was broken and confessed the longest was 2 years and all the time kept in total isolation not seeing another person apart from his interactor.
The tour last about 2 hours and is all walking and standing about so may not be suitable for person that are less mobile
I would recommend this tour highly
