This is a lovely picnic area right in the middle of Berlin. If you want a dip, a picnic, or simply walk around under the cool shade of the leaves, drop by!

If you're a tourist and just visiting for a short joint, I would suggest coming here after all the museums are closed (6pm) just to have a feel of a more local hangout-area.

Amazing place to swim inside a forest. Wild experience but avoid weekends when the place is dirty and with lots of broken bottles of bier everywhere. Also lots of gargabe

Take S1 train in the direction of Wannsee but instead of following the crowds, get off at Schlachtensee.Within 100 metres of the station a slope leads down to a beautiful clear, tree lined lake.Fantastic for a cooling walk on a hot summer's day in the shade. If you are a swimmer, bring your cossie as this is the place that locals in the know use.If you have access to a cycle then bringing it here on the S Bahn is a good option. There is a small cafe/beer garten at the station and a similar set up half way around the lake.
We had a great day out here when the sun in Berlin was just too hot.

Getting off a stop early to look at Mexikoplatz station is also a worthwhile delay. The station and surrounding buildings will amaze.
Return to town on S7 to visit Grunwald Gleis 17 memorial

Once again, even though its almost in the centre of the city, nearby Steglitz shopping area, not to far away from Kudamm, you get a feeling you are in some small remote Brandenburg town. Even the UBahn stations here look nice and pictoresque. On the lake itself there is a great Restaurant with a beautiful terrace overlooking the water. Must see, must go, must be. Go there with the bicycle, do a spin or two, seat by the lake, enjoy life! Berlin at its best!

Having lived for 10 years in Schlachtensee in the fifties and having visited many times since moving to the US I still find the place a beautiful oasis in a now bustling city.Walking through the quiet streets and seeing the many remaining old mansions brings back many childhood memories.
