We think Berlin is a nice and interesting city with an easy going atmosphere. This time it was very hot and we wondered what the average Berliner would do to fight the heat. We heard that a lot go swimming in one of the many lakes outside the city centre. We chose the Schlachtensee. Big lake, clean water, little private Sandy beaches, a relaxed atmosphere, we saw families and couples, Young and old. It is all for Free and near the U-bahn. Lovely Biergarten and beautiful restaurant nearby. But we had a picknick with us so don 't know about those.

This is a real gem, eaily reached by bus or S-bahn to Berlin Schlachtensee; really close by is a "Goody" Cafe' with vegan/veggy stuff (all the stuff inside the Cafe' is written in english) - highly recommended! You can spend a wonderful day by the lake. The water is not the cleanest and very cold but still worth visiting and swimming in it. You can hire little boats or take your own dingy. A walk around the lake is also wonderful and took us approx. 2h; you can stop for a visit half way through at the Biergarten - enjoy your day at the beautiful Schlachtensee :)

Berlin is such a wonderful green city with very easy access to lovely woods and lakes for a peaceful walk. Over time I have probably walked around most of the lakes in the Grunewald forest. I was last here in November on a cold but sunny day. After walking with friends we sat in the biergarten by the lake at Die Fischerhütte for hot drinks. I love the contrast of the seasons, wrapped up on a cold winter day or swimming and soaking up the sunshine in the summer. This is a lovely place for both.

This lake was easy to get to from Berlin centre by the S bahn. We went with a group for a swim on a very sunny day and were surprised how lovely and warm the water was! It was busy with lots of locals/German holiday goers. There's an Aldi near the train stop which is handy. Boat rental. The ground is dirt rather than grass though so take a rug or something to sit on.

We went to Schlactensee on a sunny weekend day and were joined by LOTS of people at the lake, but even so it was very nice and relaxing. The lake is so nice to swim in and there was plenty of space around the lake for picnics, sunbathing, sports etc. What a nice way to spend a lazy afternoon, and not too far from Berlin. The Biergarten there looked pretty good too, although expensive. Be aware that it is much less busy on weekdays.
