An amazing church; inside and out, architecturally beautiful, and with very vivid colours. Outside one can see it's green colour coating on on the roof, and its characteristic black belltower, with the faded green paint at the top. Outside, as approaching from the road, you can't enter from there, but from round the side to the right. Walking that way, one met a statue of Martin Luther. Entering the tourist door, there was lots of tourist tat, selling postcards, mini churches, jewellery and... Playmobil Martin Luther! A special edition for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. So cute! In this section of the church, one could also buy tickets for travelling up the spire for a magnificent view of the city, and to see the underground crypt/cistern. Entering the main bit of the church, one is mesmerised; the architecture, sculptures, paintings, stain glass, gold plated artwork is all amazing, characteristic of a Catholic church. It is huge and just above entering, the organ is situated, also stunning, with two other smaller organs at the sides. There are balconies to the left and right, forbidden for tourists, with white walls and gold finishes. At the end in the centre, the décor is amazing, and one can even light a candle for one euro, and place it on a "candle tree". All in all the inside of the Michaeliskirche is amazing, and rich with awe. Moving on, later, we went up the spiral to see the view at the top. We went up a small staircase and then took the lift up to the top. The lift goes quite fast, and has a screen showing you on the "church map", and how fast it's going. At the end, one can see the temperature, the wind speed and direction at the top of the church, and how you actually are. 105,7 metres! Getting out, it is quite windy, but the view is spectacular. One can see the whole of Hamburg from here and all the church spires around as well. A perfect view of the harbour, and the Elbphilarmonie, can be seen here, and you can even go up some small stairs and get even higher. It's breathtaking! Coming down, we also had a small peak in the crypt, which had various artefacts, and a huge piece from the old clock in the belltower. To go further and see the cistern, we had to pay extra. We exited from the left, and ended up in the park behind the church. One of the nicest churches in Hamburg!!

Excellent visitor attraction. Walked out from Central station. (was disappointed that nearby St Nicholas was closed on a Saturday?) Took the double ticket deal for tower and Crypt. I loved the tower and less so the crypt. My partner loved the crypt and less so the tower. Great history to the building. The views from the upper platform are breathtaking especially on a windy day . lol. Took the lift up and walked down. Everyone should walk down to see the insides of the building and the timing mechanisms etc. Afterwards we nipped into the main part of the church. Very nice. But a service was about to start and we had to leave. I struggled a bit with the ticket machine at first but take your time and it will work out. Very busy at one point and we queued to get the lift up. Only 10 people max at a time. Well worth a visit especially on a nice, warm, clear day as we got.

The outside of St Michael's is magnificent. The inside is beautiful, if a little plain.
The real gem here is the view from the bell tower. There was an entrance fee but it was worth it for the 360 degree views of Hamburg.
Word of warning, there is an elevator but there are several flights of stairs leading up to it so not disabled or injury friendly.

It only take a short time to go up the tower and enjoy the view of the city from there. There is a public parking just a minute away.

Nothing spectacular, but it's the best view from above at Hamburg. So it's a must - go
P.s it's crowded
