Very bad Hotel. Hotel am Oper in Dusseldorf.
2 Things are excellent. Breakfast and location.
But the rest?
The reception? No smile at all. Obviously never trained in how to approach the customer friendly.
The rooms? I guess since the seventies never restyled or repared. Also couldnt take a bath. The stop was gone and they couldnt provide an other one.
They dare to double or triple the rates when the city is crowded ( foe example during boat dusseldorf)
An example of how some hotel owners can earn lots of money without any investment.

Stayed: January 2018, travelled on business

I have stay at this hotel for the past 10 years and each year I tell myself that I will not stay there again. It is getting very worn out. The carpets are very dirty wit big stains all over. I did not want to walk about in the room without shoes.
The shower did not have a shower curtain and there was no bath plug to use the bath.
By the time I had finished the floor was very wet.
I have to travel to Dusseldorf every year for a meeting in January, This hotel is on 30 metres from the Metro Station and 100 metres from some great Restaurants.
No English TV. Unless they spend money on the hotel this year I will not be there next January.

Room Tip: All the rooms are the same, Very Poor

Decided to book this hotel as it was very cheap and in the middle of everything! Stopped 3 nights with a friend. There were 2 single beds which felt bigger than normal and I am a big guy. Room was a decent size and had a small balcony, bath room was a good size with a separate door to the toilet. If anything the room could of done with a coat of paint but that did not bother me as we were only in there to sleep and out most of the day. The hotel is a 2min walk to where all the bars are and a 5min walk to the river and the underground is about 50m away. All in all the hotel was spot on for what we wanted.

Room Tip: not all rooms have a balcony even though they are small it is nice to stand on for a bit of fresh air in the morning

1st of all every single review talks about the location and with this they are 100% correct. The distance to the old town (Altstadt) is approximately 100 steps (30 - 45 seconds !) from the hotel and from there you have the most amazing choice of pubs, bars, restaurants, shops, art gallery etc.. If you go a further couple of minutes you have the high end shopping street Konigsalle and a little further the more standard shops, but still worth visiting, on the Shadowstrasse Its around 5 mins walk (through the old town) to the Rhein where you will find great cafes directly on the bank. The nearest underground (Heinrich heine Allee in approx 1 minute walk and from there its a short 5 mins ride to the main train station costing under Euro 3,00 each way. In summary ... 100% location points.
For the price it is difficult to assess as a Saturday night outside of the trade fairs is around Euro 42,00 but from reading other reviews a figure nearer to Euro 300,00 can be charged. So in summary Euro 42,00 is unbeatable and highly recommended but for Euro 300,00 I may look at some of the other hotels for the same price however if the hotel charges around Euro 150,00 to Euro 200,00 then would seriously consider this one.
The check in and check out is as good as you would expect in any hotel - friendly, professional, multi lingual etc. etc.. The hotel also offers a lift, which for old buildings is not always standard so a bonus.
Now the room ... sleep quality great, noise from the old town not noticeable (and this is a review of a Saturday night), bathroom spotlessly clean/probably 10 years old and general room standard also of the highest standard with regards to being clean and attention paid to the small/awkward corners. In addition and whilst not huge the rooms on the front of the hotel (advisable if you might be worried about the noise from the old town) the room offers a small balcony with a view of the opera and a great place to watch the world go past ... or on a Saturday stumble ! But looking further into the room and as mentioned by other reviewers the holes in the wall and screws that I imagine had previously held pictures does let the general ambiance down. I counted in a small single room (which was more than adequate for a Saturday night after having enjoyed the old town) 14 holes/screws.
In general though if you can get a room for the prices mentioned above this is highly recommended for a stay in Dusseldorf where you literally fall out of the door to enjoy all of the highlights that the great city of Dusseldorf has to offer.

Room Tip: Ask for the front of the hotel and not the rear

I booked this hotel as I was looking for a hotel centrally location and close to metro.
The purpose of the trip was participation in the exhibition and the prices during the messe period are crazy. One night at this hotel was around 250 EUR a night, taking into account that the reservation was done 10 months ahead. Of course, in a normal situation I wouldn't pay more than 100 and only because of its location.

Two things that really deserve a good comment are location and breakfast. The rest is nothing good to say. Hotel is old and requires massive renovation. Personal at the desk is trying to be nice, but very inefficient. Big mess in their system. I was sending them requests via Booking - no replies. You have to pay before you enter, meaning credit card is charged in ahead. For me that was not convenient as we were on the business trip and my colleague was supposed to pay with the corporate credit card. But he arrived later in the evening, so I was forced to pay with my personal credit card details. Then we had to leave the hotel at 4am due to the early flight and asked to check out in the evening, so that we could just leave the keys at night and leave without dealing with an invoice. That was not allowed.
