Owner description: Azkuna Zentroa is the centre for art and culture located right in the heart of Bilbao and is housed in one of the most emblematic buildings of the city, the former municipal wine exchange market. Refurbished and restored by Philippe Starck, Azkuna Zentroa has a diverse cultural programme where art, knowledge, design, science, new technologies and literature converge, as well as a varied physical activity offering. A multipurpose and contemporary centre where disciplines, contents and the general public are interrelated, which increases the cultural level of the general public and contributes to the enrichment of Bilbao and its internationalisation.

This old wine barrel stock building has been transformed in a multi-purpose centre. Philip Starck chose to put three separate brick blocks inside the old walls which are lightly balancing on pilars decorated by several artists. Though inside it is a bit dark it is a place popular for youth gathering and it lives throughout the day. You can see people swimming on the top roof from below.
The centre has several food and drink possibilities besides the cultural spots. We had an excellent time in the sun at the roof terrace. Good bar, happy people and nice bar tender.

Unusual space... Not sure I'd rate it as highly as some previous reviews but we did enjoy a pleasant hour in the Cafe on the rooftop. I think the main roof terrace would have been great but I couldn't find my way to it. It may possibly have been closed as it was a public holiday

The building itself is worth the visit from architectural point of view. It's old and beautiful renovated with help of Philip Starck.
At this moment (until October) there's a free exposition downstairs "Milarda MadeinUSA" with installations and other work from Antoni Milarda. This exposition is great and really originally. Maybe I shouldn't say this, but we liked this more then the Guggenheim also because nobody seems to go here.
After visiting the exposition, I recommend to have a drink at the rooftop terrace; great cocktails and chosen as 'Bilbao terrace of the year'.

Enjoyed the visit and found a lot to see and learn here. I asked a few questions at the information desk and at their shop and everyone was helpful.
Lots of interesting projects going on and it is definitely one of those urban spaces to draw inspiration from.

The Azkuna was formally an old wine warehouse built in the early 1900's that fell into disuse and was totally renovated and rebuilt, whilst keeping the original facade. It was opened in around 2010.

We stumbled across it one day whilst out walking and, wondering what all the people were doing, followed some inside.

The ground floor was amazing. Quite a large dark space, that was only partially covered by the floors above (which had windows looking down onto it) and a staggering number of multicoloured columns.

We went upstairs to the library and observed a conference centre and what looked like examination rooms with students in them. There was also a gym, theatres, an art centre and cafes and restaurants.

It was only later that we read that there was an indoor pool upstairs as well as a terrace where you could sun bake.

The architects and builders have done an excellent job in retaining the facade of the old building whilst providing a beautiful modern multi-purpose facility.
