Owner description: Azkuna Zentroa houses a cultural and leisure space within one of the most emblematic buildings of the city, offering a wide variety of events for anyone who visits. A meeting point where you can share, learn and enjoy the different cultural, leisure and sports proposals aimed at all target publics either individually, in groups or as a family. The 43,000 square metres of Azkuna Zentroa have been erected in the old wine warehouse of the city. It is a building with a modern character where past, present and future blend together, declared "Heritage of Cultural Interest" by the Basque Government in 1999. The façades and part of the space, designed by the Bilbao architect Ricardo Bastida at the beginning of the 20th century, have been maintained and renovated. The exterior classicism contrasts with the unique, innovative and sober interior space designed by Philippe Starck, where the life and energy of Bilbao are crystallized. Exhibitions, concerts, conferences, children's workshops, physical activities of all kinds, reading area, a place to have a coffee, etc. The offer of Azkuna Zentroa is daily and highly varied thanks to its multidiscipline programme and extended opening hours. It doesn't matter whether your visit is a one-off or if you live in a nearby geographical area, you will always find an attractive proposal that suits you which you will thoroughly enjoy.

This old warehouse building was near our hotel so we were in and out every day during our Bilbao stay. It has been very stylishly refurbished as a multi-function space.

Loved the Phillipe Stark pillars which are all different, there was ongoing maintenance work and some of them were partially covered up.

We eventually located the swimming pool which is high above the ground floor, it is weird to see people moving about through the glass. Wasn't clear how to get up to the roof terrace unless you were dining at the restaurant up top.

There is a nice cafe bar on the ground floor too.

This old wine barrel stock building has been transformed in a multi-purpose centre. Philip Starck chose to put three separate brick blocks inside the old walls which are lightly balancing on pilars decorated by several artists. Though inside it is a bit dark it is a place popular for youth gathering and it lives throughout the day. You can see people swimming on the top roof from below.
The centre has several food and drink possibilities besides the cultural spots. We had an excellent time in the sun at the roof terrace. Good bar, happy people and nice bar tender.

Unusual space... Not sure I'd rate it as highly as some previous reviews but we did enjoy a pleasant hour in the Cafe on the rooftop. I think the main roof terrace would have been great but I couldn't find my way to it. It may possibly have been closed as it was a public holiday

The building itself is worth the visit from architectural point of view. It's old and beautiful renovated with help of Philip Starck.
At this moment (until October) there's a free exposition downstairs "Milarda MadeinUSA" with installations and other work from Antoni Milarda. This exposition is great and really originally. Maybe I shouldn't say this, but we liked this more then the Guggenheim also because nobody seems to go here.
After visiting the exposition, I recommend to have a drink at the rooftop terrace; great cocktails and chosen as 'Bilbao terrace of the year'.

Enjoyed the visit and found a lot to see and learn here. I asked a few questions at the information desk and at their shop and everyone was helpful.
Lots of interesting projects going on and it is definitely one of those urban spaces to draw inspiration from.
