Highlight of 8 days spent eating and drinking in San Sebastián and Bilbao. 60 seconds from the Guggenheim museum.
Exceeded all expectations and justified the other reviews. It's not cheap, with the food typically from €70 per person for three courses. But the quality of the cooking is top drawer, the ingredients are first class, the portions very generous, the drink is very reasonably priced (see below), the dining room is lovely and it's all backed by great service (they'll happy split dishes). Worth every single penny.
First things, first, probably the best bread we've ever tasted (and we love bread and eat a lot). Bought from a baker 20km away, it was incredible - thick, chewy tasty crust and the softest inside.
We selected lobster and octopus to start. They suggested we split these and have a portion each. Both absolutely fantastic. Lobster perfectly cooked, generous portions and beautify presented. The octopus was the best we've ever had, four thick tentacles each, marinated and chargrilled, served with an orange and rosemary dressing that you apply yourself, all served with crushed potato. Both so, so tasty.
For mains we had "bull tail stew" (oxtail taken off the bone, made into two generous timbales and served with jus and stuffed pasta) which was full of flavour and easily satisfied a big appetite.
And the suckling pig which was sensational. Hind portion, flank and thigh. Perfectly cooked, crispy thin skin, with super moist meat, together with terrific sauce and vegetables. Again very generous portion.
We were stuffed but squeezed in a shared dessert of their version of strawberries (including other red berries) and a frozen cream. Lovely.
Drink very reasonable. Only one of us likes wine so we bought by the glass - Albarino €3 per glass, Rioja £4, calvados €7 for a treble and a very large G&T €13. It does offer a wide and very reasonably priced wine selection.
Really cannot recommend highly enough.
A bit of a walk, 10-15 minutes, but would suggest a pre-meal drink at the Sir Winston Churchill - great cocktail/G&T bar.
