Highlight of 8 days spent eating and drinking in San Sebastián and Bilbao. 60 seconds from the Guggenheim museum.

Exceeded all expectations and justified the other reviews. It's not cheap, with the food typically from €70 per person for three courses. But the quality of the cooking is top drawer, the ingredients are first class, the portions very generous, the drink is very reasonably priced (see below), the dining room is lovely and it's all backed by great service (they'll happy split dishes). Worth every single penny.

First things, first, probably the best bread we've ever tasted (and we love bread and eat a lot). Bought from a baker 20km away, it was incredible - thick, chewy tasty crust and the softest inside.

We selected lobster and octopus to start. They suggested we split these and have a portion each. Both absolutely fantastic. Lobster perfectly cooked, generous portions and beautify presented. The octopus was the best we've ever had, four thick tentacles each, marinated and chargrilled, served with an orange and rosemary dressing that you apply yourself, all served with crushed potato. Both so, so tasty.

For mains we had "bull tail stew" (oxtail taken off the bone, made into two generous timbales and served with jus and stuffed pasta) which was full of flavour and easily satisfied a big appetite.

And the suckling pig which was sensational. Hind portion, flank and thigh. Perfectly cooked, crispy thin skin, with super moist meat, together with terrific sauce and vegetables. Again very generous portion.

We were stuffed but squeezed in a shared dessert of their version of strawberries (including other red berries) and a frozen cream. Lovely.

Drink very reasonable. Only one of us likes wine so we bought by the glass - Albarino €3 per glass, Rioja £4, calvados €7 for a treble and a very large G&T €13. It does offer a wide and very reasonably priced wine selection.

Really cannot recommend highly enough.

A bit of a walk, 10-15 minutes, but would suggest a pre-meal drink at the Sir Winston Churchill - great cocktail/G&T bar.

There are some very good restaurants in Bilbao. This is right up there in the top one. We shared a half portion of Jamon for our starter it was beautifully aged and had the sweetness you crave from this excellent meat.

We had two fish courses for our mains. Hake which was excellent and tuna (rare) which was magnificent. Thats magnificent.

The above was supported by the excellent Enate Chardonnay from the Somontano region.

I think we paid around 80 euros. Not cheap but if we want cheap we will go to a chicken farm. If you are in Bilbao do visit this first class restaurant around the corner from the Gran Hotel Domine. We wanted to book for the following night so we could check out their meat courses but sadly they were fully booked. Forget the Guggenheim go here instead. You can both understand the art and eat it at Porrue

Porrue restaurant looks fairly understated from outside but don't get put off by the outside appearance, this place is classy and a great place to stop for a meal.
The restaurant has a modern decor, large well appointed tables. The staff is attentive and personal and the most importantly, the food is excellent. Ham starter and Ox tail stew were excellent.
We had a great experience here.

We spent the afternoon at the Guggenheim and found this restaurant on TripAdvisor. The restaurant is a few blocks from the museum and the reviews were good so we decided to give it a try. Daniel was our wait staff and immediately suggested the fish for two. We ordered the fish, the scallop tartar, and some veggies.

The meal started out with these wonderful grilled local green peppers. I had hoped that my husband would skip since peppers are noton his list of favorite food but he ate his half quickly and was watching mine share with an evil eye.

The scallops were very fresh and had a good flavor. They were served in a little patty that was covered with a light tomato gazpacho. Both the soup and scallops were delicious.

We then got the fish which came with potatoes and salad. They nicely seasoned fish came to the table in perfect fillets so we each got four equal pieces. The veggies were grilled and very tasty.

All in all, I would eat here every chance I got if I lived in Bilbao.
