Dining at Arzak was a very nice experience. The ambiance is quite unique for a 3-star Michelin restaurant as it is quite casual.
The menu was interesting and the starters magnificent.
I was a little bit disapointed with the winelist, which was not as impressive as I would hace thought and with the sommelier, which not as nice as he should be.
But then, the chef came and she made us forget that little disapointment with her kind words.

This experience is one my tastebuds will have a hard time readjusting from. To say that the flavors pop in your mouth is understanding it, what a magnificent exposure to just deliciousness. And to add the cherry to the top we got to meet the Man, Myth, The Legend- Chef Juan Arzak came out to greet several tables and we were lucky to share a few words with him. However, I wish it was after our 1st tasting, so he would of appreciated the little bit of drooling we had going on!

Cheers Arzak, thanks for making the 1st day of my 40th Celebration an unforgettable one! God Bless the MotherLand! Your Miami Fans! Dale ;)

We've been to a few 3 starred places, not many. We were super excited about visiting having watch Anthony Bourdain's special on San Sebastian and this restaurant. The food is definitely unique, sublime, and special. The odd part is what they expect of the guest. In this stratosphere of restaurants, one expects some curation of food and wine. The chef, after all, is an artist whose materials are food and drink and whose canvas is your eyes, nose and tongue. So it was odd that no matter what advice we sought, it was turned back to us and our preferences. The simplest question, standard in any fine dining establishment, would be what wine would recommended to drink with the food that was coming (we chose extensive tasting menus). No straight answer was given. "What do you like?" was the response. Hmmm. Given our unfamiliarity with the regional wine, we were at a loss. Not to say the service was bad, but that is part of the service we have come to expect.

The other element of service we noticed was a lack of mind-reading attentiveness. The best place we have gone to have had staff that have that extra eye and that 6th sense that tells them you need something and they ought to check to see if you need something, refill your water, your wine or answer your question almost before you conceive of it. Here at Arzak, the service was fine, the wait staff friendly, knowledgeable about the food, but just not clairvoyant.

So the food. Seafood of all sorts, some duck, some lamb, some just absolutely deliciousness in every mouthful. Presentation was not over the top, but elegant, pleasing, details attended to.

You dont come to a place like this for a bargain. If you think too much about what you pay for at this level, any rational person would demure. But that said, you would pay about 50% more for this level of gastronomy in NY, Paris, London or SF....so a bargain it was. :)
