The cathedral is not open to public, because it is under constant repairing. So we visited the church with a guided tour, paying about 15-20 € for each adult.
The tour was really amazing. It start with a brief explanation of the city wall outside the cathedral and then a complete journey from the foundation to the top,
with a detailed explanation of what happened to the structure in the past on each storic period, also with the aid of plastic models...
Very completly and clear explanations of all areas during the timeline...
Our tour was in italian, but there is a lot of languages available. The guide is very kind and professional, and she answers to all our questions.
Remember to book in advance (also 1 or 2 days before) and to be on time for the start of the tour.

The cathedral is being renovated and a guided tour is the only way to see it.
The cathedral itself is quite pretty without being remarkable but the tour was fantastic.
Tours are mostly is Castilian and Basque with English language tours only occasionally. We joined a Castillian (Spanish) tour but were given a headset that gave a very full explanation of what we were looking at. The guided tour did not always precisely follow the same order as the headset tour but there are signs with numbers and it is easy to put in the appropriate number to get it right.
The interest stems from the archaeology uncovered in the restoration and the story successive (historical) restorations contributing to the building's decay until this latest one stabilised it. There is very clever light show at the end of the tour that illuminates a side chapel in the painted decor of successive generations as revealed during the restoration.
Visit is about €10 and well worth it. Visit takes just over an hour.

This is a bit odd visit because the building is in the middle of huge restoration works. This is also a reason for its interest. The guided visit turns out to be very interesting because through the explanation of restoration works the guide explains the history of the building and the ciity, the evolution of the church, the problems and solutions. All was very well explained by a very knowledgeable guide.

Catedral de Santa Maria is much more than your typical cathedral visit. The cathedral is undergoing a very long renovation and this allows you to gain a real sense of the history, culture and architecture. From the ancient foundations, you climb up through the history of the cathedral and eventual, donning a hard hat, you emerge high in the bell tower. Our guide was hugely knowledgeable and she held our attention throughout. Even our two teenagers, no mean feat. For those who want something more, the Catedral de Santa Maria is a must.
