Lovely hotel, but it depends what you’re here for.

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 15 Aug 2023via mobile
The Hotel Horizonte is seriously lacking curb appeal and is in a relatively run down looking area up from the cruise port outside of the main city centre. It’s a steep walk down the steps to get to nearest bars and restaurants as well as a shopping centre and supermarket (Portopi).

Despite all of this, it is a really lovely hotel and I had a most enjoyable stay. Looks are certainly deceiving, as the inside of the hotel is modern and spotlessly clean. Beds are extremely comfortable, with a large modern clean bathroom (waterfall shower) and towels changed each day of my stay, and a balcony with great views of the cruise port and the sea beyond (I was in a Superior sea view room). My room had a fridge, safety deposit box (4EUR per day I think) and air conditioning, and I honestly could not fault it at all. My only qualm was that the balcony door had a certain knack to locking it but I got there in the end.

Cannot comment on the breakfast or food in the hotel as I didn’t have any, but I saw people eating from the pool bar and it looked good, and the menu was reasonably priced. The drinks here are good value too 4€ for a large beer (decent draught beer too) and they had an extensive cocktail and spirits menu too, all of which seemed well priced. I used this hotel as a base so didn’t use the pool facilities (only the pool bar on my last day after check out), but it looked spotlessly clean like the rest of the hotel, with a variety of Bali beds, couches and sun loungers. There always seemed space when I woke up and looked down from my balcony in the morning and the pool is a decent size too so plenty of room to do lengths if you wish. Seemed to get sun the whole day too.

As lovely as the hotel is, there are some downsides:

The area isn’t the nicest. It’s quite a way out of the city centre, and the road it sits on is a little bit run down. Some surrounding buildings seem to have had building work started which has since been abandoned, but I’m not sure as to the ins and outs of this, the area just needs a lot of TLC to bring it up to standard.
There’s a small shop across the road which is fine for getting a cold drink or souvenir but has a limited selection of “supplies” for those that are room only. The cafe a few doors down from the shop is signposted and yet I did not see it open once. The closest restaurants and shops are left out of the hotel and down a steep set of stone steps (probably 250 steps) and then a quick walk down an almost vertical road and you find yourself at Portopi centre. This has some nice shops and eateries and some restaurants on the main road but none of these I can say looked appealing. Obviously this isn’t remotely practical as the walk back up is killer and to get the bus you’d need to go all the way back towards the city on the 4 bus (I think) and then back up to the top on the 46/47. I didn’t see many taxis in this area.
Lastly, for me, this hotel doesn’t particularly work as a base for a Palma city break since the hotel is a 20+ minute bus journey to the city centre and despite what other reviews say, I’d conclude as not walkable at all. The 46/47 buses to/from Plaza Espana can be conveniently caught directly outside the hotel and at €2 per person per way they’re really good value for money and are air conditioned and modern. BUT - they do not really run to the advertised schedule it seems, with up to an hour between buses at certain points of the day I felt myself constantly on google maps checking bus times only to arrive at the bus stop to an hour wait for the next bus since it came and went early, or didn’t come at all. The timetables on the website don’t reflect the reality of the bus times. They finish about 10pm but the last buses are very busy. It was too full and did not stop on one night so I had to get a taxi. Taxis weren’t too expensive but very difficult to get one. People are virtually in competition at the side of the road, at who will wave the taxi driver down first. I called the taxi company a couple of times to request but it was a 45 minute wait before I ever got a taxi to come to me, and even then if someone else is waiting and has not booked/ requested one, they’ll try and hijack yours anyway. Going from hotel to the city is easier but getting back up to the hotel is a laborious task.

Overall I would be sure to recommend Hotel Horizonte to anyone who is after a cheap bit of sun for a few days or longer on Mallorca. It’s pool area seems to be a good place to chill and relax. However if you are looking to visit Palma to take in the sites of the city, I would recommend booking something closer to the city centre (or within it) with better transport links. I spent a lot of time on this trip scheduling my day to the public transport, so staying closer to the main area will resolve this issue. I’ll definitely be back for a few relaxing low cost days in the sun, but my next visit to the city will be spent in another hotel.

This hotel is so underated. It’s absolutely beautiful inside & out. Rooms were exceptionally cleaned every day & very modern with really comfy beds, tv and a fridge! The pool/poolside was soo relaxing with a lovely little cocktail/cafe bar serving good food & drinks! The views of the port were breathtaking, never seen anything like it.

Wasn’t expecting much with what I paid and the reviews on here but wow I was amazed. There wasn’t much around the hotel but I was happy just to relax at this hotel for the time I stayed.

Maria & Angel at reception were so lovely and helpful. Very chatty, friendly and could have a laugh with us!

Before reading this review, please be aware that we was only here for one afternoon/night due to our flight being cancelled and TUI putting us in this hotel. Red flags immediately came up with me as how did a hotel in the middle of their summer season have enough room capacity for a coach load (National Express size coach, fully packed) to accomodate all of us.

Here goes....

Location : In the heeart of Palma, yet as we was driving to the hotel, the area was rough, half finished developoments, closed shops, a real run down area. We then started going up and up a very windey road, like a roller coaster, no lights at all on this road, and no walkway, not that you could have walked to this hotel, this would definately be a taxi job each time you wanted to leave the hotel. At the very top of this vast hill, the coach stopped, we looked through the window and the only place we could see was this hotel, but from the outside, apart from saying hotel on the sign, you could not tell, it just looked like a run down, plain building. We were shocked to say the least....but at least we wasn't stranded at the airport.

The Hotel and Check In : The front foyer was fine, clean, tidy, they had some drink containers with lemon and lime in, but they were empty. But they did have some drink machines, 4 euros for a small bottle of water, but desperate times, in that heat, I would have paid anything. They only do rooms for 2 people, no family rooms, so our group of eleven have to have 6 rooms, one of our girls had a room to herself. We were given the key, but not told where our rooms were located. We noticed that people were hiking their suitcases down a big flight of stairs....no lift, so followed them. Down the stairs, again in some foyer but no directions to where the rooms were. A lady appeared, and asked if we were ok, I said.....how do we get to the rooms?.....follow me, she says. We then exited the foyer, walked through the bar/seating area, past the swimming pool into another foyer, where there was a lift. We eventually got to our room only to find as we opened the door, a pair of legs from the bed. They had given us a room that was already occupied. So we had to trapes back to Reception, with our luggage, up the stairs, and ask for another room. Their excuse.....we are not used to checking in so many people at one time. Our room was the next room.....original room 140, should have been 141. So off we go again. By the time we get to our room, Im knackered, sweating buckets and not happy.

Room : Basic to say the very least. There was a terrace with 2 metal chairs and a table, but becuase of the heat, you could not sit down on them, being metal they were red hot, we had to get the towel out of the shower room to sit on them. The view....the back of other peoples blocks of flats. No view.
The air condition unit was placed in the corner of the room by the patio door, so that night, although on, we could not feel it due to the air going just into that corner. If you put it on higher, it made an awful racket. There was only 1 pillow which was hard and shallow, I ended up taking the spare duvet they had in the wardrobe, folding that up and making it into a pillow with more height, gave my husband my pillow, so he had a better sleep also.

Pool : Although we didn't use the pool, it did look nice, and seemed to have plenty of sunbeds, however, not if our coach load had used it !!

Bar and food : The outside bar/seating area was lovely. Comfy chairs/settees and we ordered a club sandwich and chips each, and it was amazing, probably the best meal I had all holiday, even in our hotel we stayed at for the week. TUI had given us an evening buffet meal, but they did not start serving until 7.30pm, and we was too hungry to wait. The girls etc had a meal there and said that it was awful. Cold, and not much of a selection. Glad we had our sandwich !!. I think also this was a cashless hotel as we was told that it could either go on our room tab, or we could pay by card only, there and then.

Viewpoint : Apart from the sandwich, the viewing area was amazing. If you walked along the boardwalk at the side of the 2nd foyer, to the end, you could see all over Palma, the cathedral, to marina, the big cruise ships. It was a lovely site.

Overall : Im glad we were not stranded at the airport, and that we was given accomdation, but this hotel was classed as 3 star....I would give it a 1 star....2 at a push, only because of the sandwich and viewing area. I would not recommend this hotel at all.

Thank you for reading, again, please bear in mind this is only my opinion and we was only here for 12 hours (thank goodness).

I travelled here for a few days as my first trip as a solo traveller. What a lovely hotel. For the price I paid I expected it to be pretty basic but I was so pleasantly surprised. The views alone….wow!

The room was clean and spacious with incredibly effective air con. Big bathroom with powerful shower.

The highlight was the pool area-I stayed by the pool most days and loved it. Plenty of loungers, even at busy times. Lovely clean pool area. And the pool bar was great-lots of yummy cocktails to drink by the pool as well as a small lunch menu. The staff were super friendly-much praise for ‘Aga’ who was there in the mornings and always had a smile.

The area around the hotel is steep but I walked to the cathedral area (breathtaking) where there also lots of lovely tapas places. There is also a shopping centre about 5 minutes walk from hotel with Zara, mango, pull & bear etc as well as a huge carrefour supermarket.

Would love to return here!

We booked a week at this hotel from 4th to 11th of July. We knew what standard to expect as a three star hotel. All we demand to have a nice stay are that the rooms were clean and that there are no pests.

Up until Saturday, everything was as to be expected. The evening Saturday we arrived back at the hotel late, and there were ants all over the main space and the bathroom area. At first, the receptionist said he couldn't do anything. After saying we were not going to stay and sleep in a room with ants he said he could come "clean". We were told the hotel was fully booked and there was no way for them to change our room. The receptionist "cleaned" with some paper towels and regular cleaning spray, and claimed he would leave a message for the cleaning staff to do a full clean of the room the next morning.

Ants can't be cleaned away and as they offered no sollution, we booked Sunday-Tuesday at a different hotel as we were not going to stay in a room with invasive ants.

The next morning, the new reseptionist knew nothing of what had happened and offered no sollution.

We decided to complain through booking.com. After some back and forth they told us this: the hotel doesn't want to reimburse you in any way because they claimed that no complaint had been made. They knew nothing of any ant problem.

Stay away, as this hotel will do nothing to fix a situation and will downright lie when a complaint is made.

Hotel reception staff incredibly rude ( young guy ) I’m currently still staying here and have hated my stay that much I’ve tried to find alternative accommodation!
Electric kept tripping in room ( 399)
Balcony tiny and when I asked to move rooms as the electric kept going off they put me in a room worse than my own. Asked to be in the main hotel and the female receptionist laughed at me!
As a solo guest I felt very intimidated and unsafe
Food lukewarm and looked awful..
Was slagged off by bar staff without them realising I did understand some of what they were saying
Room dirty and had a musty stale cigarette smell
Couldn’t get any tv channels and wi fi incredibly poor
I really wouldn’t recommend this hotel to anyone
